New Xerox Software Reduces Copyright Worries for Print Providers.

PHILADELPHIA -- Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) has enhanced its industry-leading FreeFlow(R) Digital Workflow Collection with software that helps print providers ensure that printed and copied material they produce, such as articles, textbook excerpts and other documents, do not violate copyright laws.

The new FreeFlow copyright management solution transforms what used to be a labor- and time-intensive process into an automated, cost-effective transaction. Securing copyright clearance is a responsibility shared by corporate libraries, educational institutions, college bookstores, and the print providers that support these entities. The process, when completed manually, often generates errors, cumbersome record-keeping and unnecessary costs.

Xerox's integration with Copyright Clearance Center, the world's largest licensing agent of text reproduction rights located in Danvers, Mass., allows print providers to quickly and efficiently gain copyright clearance. The FreeFlow software links directly into Copyright Clearance Center's extensive rights licensing database. The Xerox copyright management solution is an option within FreeFlow Makeready, software that streamlines the set-up of a print job, such as layout, page formatting and editing.

Copyright requests or verifications are submitted to Copyright Clearance Center through FreeFlow Makeready either as electronic files or hardcopy scans that are imported directly from Xerox FreeFlow scanners. For example, as a collection of articles is assembled into booklet form, the software displays copyright permissions and usage costs, which are provided and validated by Copyright Clearance Center. Next, the quantity is confirmed, and the job is sent to the digital press. The software then saves the licensing information for that particular booklet, as well as the licensing information for any future reprints.

Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, selected Xerox's copyright management solution so that it could deliver course packs faster without the worry of copyright infringement.

"Automating the copyright management process makes good business sense," said Jeff Dible, plant manager, Ohio State University Print Shop. "Since the Xerox solution is connected directly to Copyright Clearance Center, we will be able to produce course packs with confidence and turn around requests with greater speed and efficiency."

The Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Collection is comprised of software components that automate and streamline print production processes to help digital printing businesses save time and money.

Availability and Pricing

Xerox's copyright management solution will be available in July in the U.S. as an option for FreeFlow Makeready at a manufacturer's list price of $5,000. FreeFlow Makeready is available worldwide at the U.S. list price of $18,000.
