New Vishay Siliconix ICs Drive White LEDs with High Efficiency up to 80% in Backlighting Applications for Compact Portable Electronics.

) today released two new white LED drivers that deliver high efficiency up to 80% during operation in compact handheld and battery-operated electronics.

The new SiP12401 boost controller and SiP12501 boost converter A boost converter (step-up converter) is a power converter with an output dc voltage greater than its input dc voltage. The SiP12401 boost controller IC uses double-cell NiMH or alkaline and Li-ion batteries to drive white LEDs connected in series for uniformly bright backlighting without the need for ballast resistors. It supports an input voltage range of 1.8 V to 5.0 V.

Designed to drive white LEDs connected in parallel, the SiP12501 is a boost converter IC for single- or double-cell NiMH or alkaline battery Alkaline batteries are a type of power cell dependent upon the reaction between zinc and manganese dioxide (Zn/MnO2).

 packs. An internal low-threshold power MOSFET A Power MOSFET is a specific type of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET) designed to handle large powers. Compared to the other power semiconductor devices (IGBT, Thyristor...  allows the device to start up with a low battery voltage of 0.65 V. The SiP12501 accepts input voltages from 0.65 V to 3.3 V and regulates an output current up to 60 mA from a 0.9 V input. The performance of the converter is enhanced through thermal shutdown protection and anti-ringing control that minimizes EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference) An electrical disturbance in a system due to natural phenomena, low-frequency waves from electromechanical devices or high-frequency waves (RFI) from chips and other electronic devices. Allowable limits are governed by the FCC. .

Both devices feature a voltage-mode PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) A modulation technique that generates variable-width pulses to represent the amplitude of an analog input signal. Like its fixed-width pulse density modulation (PDM) cousin, the output switching transistor is on more of the time for a  design with internal frequency compensation to help reduce overall component count and enable design of smaller, lighter end products. For prolonged battery life, operation in PWM mode with 600 kHz switching yields high typical efficiency of 80% and 75%, respectively, for the SiP12401 and SiP12501. The LED current may be adjusted externally for analog control over intensity. Logic-controlled shutdown is provided with just 1 microamp of standby current.

The two LED drivers announced today are available in a lead (Pb)-free, 6-pin PowerPAK(R) MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing) The compression technique used in DVD-Audio that provides the highest audio quality. It delivers two channels at 192 kHz with 24-bit samples or six channels at 96 kHz. 33 package and are rated for operation over the industrial temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C.

Samples and production quantities of the new SiP12401 and SiP12501 are available now, with lead times of six to eight weeks for larger orders.
