New Ultramarathon in Boston Challenges Racers To Run 100K To Fight Children's Cancer; Chancellor Challenge Kicks Off With $100,000 To Support Race For Boston's Jimmy Fund.

On October 9, world-class ultrarunners and corporate-sponsored teams will line up for a new 100-kilometer (62-mile) road race in Boston. Brian M. Adley, chairman and CEO of Chancellor Corporation, created the event. Adley and his wife Ann personally contributed $100,00 for this event. According to Adley, the goal is to challenge business, government and the community to new levels of achievement, athletically and financially, on behalf of children stricken with cancer.

"As the parents of seven children, my wife and I have been very fortunate in raising our family," said Adley. "Our hope in creating the Chancellor Challenge is to give back something for this good fortune, as well as to promote a very worthy cause. My family's objective in providing the initial funding to organize this race is to create a Boston-based event that will rival the world's largest and most successful ultra-marathons. At the same time, we hope to increase awareness of the hardship endured by families who have children stricken with cancer. We believe that the ability to combine financial and physical muscle can translate into the ability to help people in need, especially the children who are our future."

This first-time event, to be held on a 6.2-mile loop around the Charles River, is open to teams and individual runners. The race will start at 7 AM on the Cambridge side of the Charles, with runners heading west along Memorial Drive, crossing the Charles River on the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge, heading east along the Esplanade bike path. Once runners pass the Hatch Shell, they will loop back along the inside path on the Esplanade, back to the Mass. Ave. Bridge and back to the starting point. Participants will run this distance ten times to complete the race. A $25,000 total purse will be awarded.

Organizing the Chancellor Challenge is Dave McGillivray, president of DMSE, Inc. and well-known technical manager of the historic Boston Marathon. "We are excited about the number of high-caliber athletes who are showing interest in this event," said McGillivray. "We expect the following ultrarunners to race: Rae Bischoff from South Africa, the 1998 Comrades Marathon women's champion; Russell Crawford, a three-time member of the South African men's national ultra team; Jan ven den Driessche from Belgium, winner of the 1997 River Shimanto 100K in Japan and Belgium's current top 100K runner; Daniele Cherniak and Dana Parrot, #1 American woman at 100K and 50K, respectively; Jim Garcia, Mark Godale, and Bob Sweeney, members of the USA national 100 K team. We are also expecting runners from Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Hungary and Russia."
