ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 4, 2002

Java Certified Performance Solution

Features Improved Support for Multi-CPU Systems

Tower Technology announces the availability of TowerJ release 3.9 for Solaris and Linux server platforms.

These Java Certified releases feature new threading capabilities, improved garbage collection A software routine that searches memory for areas of inactive data and instructions in order to reclaim that space for the general memory pool (the heap). Operating systems may or may not provide this feature.  and other optimizations. These new features further enhance the ability of TowerJ to improve the performance and scalability of CPU bound Same as process bound.  and application server based Refers to hardware or software that runs in the server. Contrast with client based.  Java applications.

TowerJ 3.9

Significant in this release is the new high performance thread implementation, or Mixed Threads, that combines the efficiency of Tower Threads with the ability to scale to, and better utilize multiple CPUs. TowerJ 3.9's Mixed Threads enable the mapping of multiple Java threads to a smaller number of native threads. This thread model reduces the management overhead associated with thread intensive applications as context switching Same as task switching.  is significantly lowered. This is a substantial improvement over the one-to-one thread mapping of a standard JVM See Java Virtual Machine.

and provides a significant benefit to applications with high thread overhead.

In conjunction with the Mixed Threads, TowerJ 3.9 also features a new garbage collector that utilizes multiple thread-local heaps to allow lockless, parallel allocation. With less lock contention, this also is more scalable to multiple threads and CPUs. The new collector is generational and features improved cache locality.

Like the previous version, the new release has successfully passed the Java Compatibility Test Suites and has been certified by Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA[3]) is an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information-technology services, founded on 24 February 1982.  Inc. as Java compatible. Enterprises, Application Service Providers and Independent Software Vendors deploying Java based applications can continue to utilize TowerJ's ahead-of-time compilation with the assurance that it fully supports the Java standard. This certification also provides introductory support for GUI-based applications using AWT (Abstract Windowing Toolkit) A class library from Sun that provides an application framework and graphical user interface (GUI) routines for Java programmers. AWT was the first user interface development system included in the Java Foundation Classes (JFC).  and Swing on Solaris and Linux.

About TowerJ

TowerJ is the only independent J2SE (Java 2 platform, Standard Edition) See Java 2.

J2SE - Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition
certified ahead-of-time compiler with the capability to pre-compile Java bytecode into optimized platform-specific native code. This includes all pure java components of the system; custom code, application servers, servlet engines, web servers, and jdbc drivers. Tower maintains compatibility with popular third-party application server products including WebLogic, Resin, Tomcat A popular Java servlet container from the Apache Jakarta project. Tomcat uses the Jasper converter to turn JSPs into servlets for execution. Tomcat is widely used with the JBoss application server. For more information, visit http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat. See Jakarta and JBoss.  and Jrun. Through its proprietary runtime, TowerJ is capable of mixed-mode deployment of compiled applications, providing support for the dynamic features of Java.

This unique compilation capability allows for the deployment of Java applications that excel in overall performance and scalability and also improves IP protection and manageability. For performance critical applications that are computationally and thread intensive, with minimal dynamic updating, this can result in significantly lower hardware and software licensing costs for deployment. This savings can easily justify the low cost of TowerJ.

Free evaluations of TowerJ 3.9 for Solaris and Linux are available to qualified evaluators at the Tower web site: http://www.towerj.com. Other versions are available for Windows IA32, Windows IA64, Linux IA64 and HP/UX HP/UX Hewlett-Packard UNIX operating system
