New Tool in Detecting Hazardous Materials. (Tech Talk).Industrial Scientific Corporation, in Oakdale, Pa., has designed a photo ionization ionization: see ion. ionization Process by which electrically neutral atoms or molecules are converted to electrically charged atoms or molecules (ions) by the removal or addition of negatively charged electrons. detector for portable monitoring of potentially hazardous organic compounds, such as petroleum or solvent vapors. The VX500 PID (1) (Process IDentifier) A temporary number assigned by the operating system to a process or service. (2) (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) The most common control methodology in process control. can be used in confined space-entry testing, leak assessment, arson investigation and hazardous-materials response monitoring, said company spokesman David D. Wagner. The VX500 can detect volatile compounds, such as toluene toluene (tōl`y ēn') or methylbenzene (mĕth'əlbĕn`zēn), C7H8 , xylene xylene (zī`lēn) or dimethylbenzene (dī'mĕthəlbĕn`zēn), C6H4(CH3)2 and vinyl chloride vinyl chlorideor chloroethylene Colourless, flammable, toxic gas (H2C=CHCl), belonging to the family of organic compounds of halogens. It is produced in very large quantities and used principally to make PVC, as well as in other syntheses and in , at levels as low as 100 parts per billion, using field-replaceable, plug-in detectors and interchangeable lamps, Wagner said. Use of an optional chemical filter permits detection of benzene, he explained, and an internal pump can draw remote gas samples up to 100 feet. Users can choose between "safety" and "survey" operating modes, Wagner noted. The safety mode is designed primarily for users' personal or area safety, as when entering ranks or confined spaces. When high gas levels are not evident, the survey mode can be used for leak detection or environmental work. |
