New Study Offers Hope for Millions of Americans with Knee Osteoarthritis.

, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Clinical Trial of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) for Knee Osteoarthritis Pain," was presented at the American College of Nutrition Annual Meeting in Charleston, S.C. this past Saturday. Vancouver, Wash.-based Cardinal Nutrition provided the active ingredient, OptiMSM(R).

"Knee osteoarthritis affects millions of Americans' daily lives, and safe, effective options for relieving pain and restoring mobility are limited," said Jeremy Appleton, N.D., director of scientific affairs and research and development, Cardinal Nutrition. "The study results provide long-sought validation that MSM is a safe and effective option for people who want to improve their joint health."

Study Details

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial studied the efficacy and safety of MSM in fifty patients over age 40 diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis. Participants were randomized to take three grams, twice daily of OptiMSM or placebo for 12 weeks.

Primary endpoints were the composite subscales in the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC WOMAC Western Ontario McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index Rheumatology An arthritic pain scoring system ranging from 0–no pain/disability to 100–most severe pain/disability ) on pain, stiffness, physical function, and total symptoms. Secondary endpoints included several laboratory tests for safety, serum homocysteine Homocysteine Definition

Homocysteine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in blood plasma. High levels of homocysteine in the blood are believed to increase the chance of heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and osteoporosis.

).

Results

Compared to placebo, MSM produced statistically significant decreases in WOMAC pain and physical function impairment. MSM also significantly improved performance of daily activities when compared to placebo. Secondary outcomes included significant reductions in serum homocysteine and urine malondialdehyde in those taking MSM compared to placebo. Trends towards improvement in the MSM group compared to the placebo group were observed in nearly all other outcomes studied. There were no major adverse reactions adverse reactions,

 reported in the study.

"We fully expected MSM to be effective in this study," said Appleton. "What's even more exciting is the secondary outcome surrounding homocysteine levels. The highly significant reduction in homocysteine is important, especially when several mainstream osteoarthritis drugs have been pulled off the market because they increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. By lowering homocysteine, MSM may actually reduce those risks, which is highly desirable in a joint supplement."

Cardinal Nutrition, which manufactures OptiMSM, sponsored the trial and provided the active ingredient. The abstract highlighting the results of this study will be published in the October issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. Details on the full study publication are expected soon.
