The Sustainable Forestry Board (SFB), Arlington, Virginia, USA, the non-profit organization responsible for the oversight of North America's largest forest certification program, released its new standard for sustainable forest management Sustainable forest management (SFM) is the management of forests according to the principles of sustainable development. The 2005-2009 Sustainable Forestry Initiative The Sustainable Forestry Initiative is a program to certify forests to insure they are being managed in a sustainable manner. SFI was started in 1994 by members of the American Forest and Paper Association. (SFI) Standard was developed through a 12-month public review process involving web based comment periods and review workshops throughout the United States and Canada. Based on the international scope of forest certification, several provisions were added to address social issues and the management of public lands including public involvement, indigenous peoples, non-timber forest products Non-timber forest products or NTFPs comprise all goods derived from forests of both plant and animal origin other than timber. NTFPs contribute to household income and subsistence and are of cultural importance in many rural societies. , traditional forest-related knowledge, and illegal logging.
