Taken from a recent study of more than 1, broadband Internet households, this profile of the end-user seeks to: (1) Develop a deeper understanding of the target consumer population as it relates to backup frequency and preferences; (2) Examine how "Active Archivers" (that is, those consumers who backup their data at least once per month) are different from those who rarely or never backup their data; and (3) Discuss what strategies may be best suited for marketing a convenient, inexpensive network-based backup solution to both groups of consumers Methodology In mid-, the author fielded an online survey of more than 1, broadband Internet households. The survey featured questions relating to digital storage needs in the home and office, with a particular focus on home networked-attached storage solutions (hNAS or NAS in this report). The survey also gathered information regarding PC and CE device ownership, home network adoption among broadband consumers, placement of consumer electronics and PCs within the home, and a myriad of other issues related to the digital home The sample was randomly selected from a panel of several million Internet households. The final study contains completed surveys from approximately home office workers home office workers that had both a broadband connection and a home network in place (of which currently own a network-attached storage solution); consumer households that had both a broadband connection and a home network in place (of which currently own a NAS solution); and consumer households that had a broadband connection and intended to purchase a home network in the next few months. Respondents were at least 1 years of age and were qualified as "heads-of-household" in order to be eligible to complete the survey. The survey responses were collected in mass with minimal filtering so as to retain an appropriate degree of randomness 1. randomness - An inexplicable misfeature; gratuitous inelegance. 2. randomness - A hack or crock that depends on a complex combination of coincidences (or, possibly, the combination upon which the crock depends for its accidental failure to malfunction). "This hack can output characters 40--57 by putting the character in the four bit accumulator field of an XCT and then extracting six bits - the low 2 bits of the XCT opcode are the right thing.. The data represented in this survey has a confidence level of % with a margin of error of +/- percentage points Note that, because there the survey was pre-weighted to insure a minimum number of NAS owners, the charts pertaining to non-PC storage solution ownership have been post-weighted to reflect the actual penetration of NAS solutions as determined by other research conducted by The Diffusion Group. The difference between the number of NAS owners included in the original survey and the natural rate of NAS incidence in the general population has very little effect on non-NAS-related data Similarly, the differences between consumer network owners and network intenders have also been reweighted for accuracy This analysis also makes use of what we call a "Power Ranking(TM)". This is a demand algorithm used to translate the various levels of neutral and positive interest into a factor which represents the likely market penetration of a service or device given (1) perfect market availability and (2) reasonable prices.
