New Product Digest Asbestos.W.R. Grace & Co. and the Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory Brookhaven National Laboratory, scientific research center, at Upton (town of Brookhaven), Long Island, N.Y. It was founded in 1947 by Associated Universities, a management corporation sponsored by nine eastern U.S. universities. have collaborated on a new product that destroys asbestos in fireproofing fireproofing, method of making normally combustible materials as nearly noncombustible as possible. Fireproofing generally applies to textiles and construction materials that are treated with a solution or coating of some substance that will tend to retard their installed on columns and beams without diminishing the existing fire-resistance of the material. The new technique uses a foamy foam·y adj. foam·i·er, foam·i·est 1. Of, consisting of, or resembling foam. 2. Covered with foam. foam solution sprayed directly onto asbestos-containing fireproofing. The foam chemically digests asbestos fibers Asbestos fibers are released from asbestos containing materials (ACMs). Friable asbestos containing materials release fibers more readily than encapsulated asbestos containing materials. , dissolving them into harmless minerals. Full-scale tests have confirmed that use of the product reduces asbestos to less than one percent, which is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's definition of nonasbestos material. When the treatment is done, the fireproofing is no longer a regulated material. Grace anticipates that building owners will realize significant cost savings from the new product. |
