New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded  has it all: good food, historic homes, entertainment, and music. New Orleans is also known for its excellent cuisine. It is home to internationally known chefs such as Emeril Lagasse and Paul Prudhomme. Some of the foods that you'll find in New Orleans include: beignets, puffy French donuts covered in powdered sugar; po-boys, a french bread sandwich stuffed with roast beef, hot sausage, or local seafood and dressed with lettuce & tomato and muffulettas, large round sandwiches with salami type meats, olive salad, and cheese.
