New Optivision encoder cuts the high cost of MPEG-2 encoding; new product reduces MPEG-2 data storage and transmission by 30 to 60 percent.

Optivision Inc., a leading developer of premium video and image compression Noun 1. image compression - the compression of graphics for storage or transmission

technology, will introduce the OptiVideo MPEG-2 Encoder and OptiVideo MPEG-2 Workstation, offering state-of-the-art, MPEG-2 realtime encoding.

Based upon a new set of microcode A set of elementary instructions in a complex instruction set computer (CISC). The microcode resides in a separate high-speed memory and functions as a translation layer between the machine instructions and the circuit level of the computer.  specifically designed and optimized by Optivision, the OptiVideo MPEG-2 Encoder delivers high quality and low data rate MPEG-2 encoding previously unavailable in the marketplace. This revolutionary product will dramatically change the performance expectations and entry level cost of MPEG-2 encoding for virtually all markets and applications.

The OptiVideo MPEG-2 Encoder features the groundbreaking CLM CLM - Career Limiting Move 4400 chip-set, jointly developed by Optivision and C-Cube Microsystems Inc. The CLM4400 is the industry's first four-chip microcode solution that delivers quality MPEG-2 video at 50 to 60 percent of the cost of traditional broadcast-quality MPEG encoding MPEG encoding is the process of capturing (digitizing) or converting (re-encoding) video and/or audio to one of several MPEG video and/or audio standards (codecs) for distribution (Internet, LAN) or for archiving to optical disc (CD, DVD).  solutions. The new MPEG-2 Encoder will be available as a fully configured Workstation and will sell for an estimated U.S. list price of $40,000. Separate board level OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  pricing is available upon request.

"The launch of Optivision's MPEG-2 Encoder will set new price and performance standards for MPEG-2 encoding systems," said Keith Masavage, director of product marketing, Optivision Inc. "There's an industry-wide momentum behind MPEG-2 right now, and Optivision is uniquely positioned to offer the high-quality, cost-effective MPEG-2 encoding solution that the markets are demanding."

Designed into a fully configured MPEG-2 Workstation, the OptiVideo MPEG-2 Encoder is a two board set, featuring the Encoder and Optivision's Digital Video Input Board. Each Workstation supports a wide range of video inputs including composite, component, and digital serial (D-1) as well as professional level device control. Housed in an industrial-quality, Pentium-based chassis, the OptiVideo MPEG-2 encoding Workstation delivers a complete "out-of-the-box" encoding solution.

Dr. Paul Farrelle, Optivision's chief technologist, "Our close relationship to C-Cube and in-depth knowledge of the microcode has put our product significantly out in front of the competition. Having written the four-chip microcode for C-Cube while concurrently developing our hardware has allowed us to design a compact four-chip encoder which costs one-half to one-third of our competitor's system and reduces data storage and transmission requirements by 30 to 50 percent."

The OptiVideo MPEG-2 Workstation offers an array of video and audio capabilities:

Video

- Composite Video A video color format that combines all three YUV video signals into one channel. The first video signal to include color, composite video transmits brightness/luma (Y) and colors/chroma (U and V) over one cable. NTSC, PAL and SECAM television sets have composite video inputs.  Input and Output

- S-Video Input and Output

- Component Video Input

- Digital Serial (D-1) Video Input (D-1 Output Optional)

- Composite Video Output (Pass Through for Previewing)

- VCR VCR: see videocassette recorder.

and VTR (VideoTape Recorder) A videotape recording and playback machine. VTR may refer to consumer MiniDV and DV recorders or to professional machines such as Betacam, DVCPRO and DVCAM.  Device Control

- Adjustable MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  Data Compression Rates (.6 - 15 mbits/sec)

- "Decode While Encoding" for Realtime Compression Monitoring

Audio

- Stereo Line Level Audio Inputs and Outputs

- Accurate Audio/Video Synchronization

- Control of Input Gain (Volume) Level

- Adjustable Sampling Rates (32, 44.1 and 48 kHz)

- Adjustable Audio Data Compression Rates

Each Workstation will support a variety of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 multiplexing options including:

- MPEG System (MPEG-1 Content)

- MPEG Transport (MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Content)

- MPEG-2 Program (MPEG-2 Content)
