New Oce Security Card Reader Supports e-Passports.

LAS VEGAS Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  -- Oce (Nasdaq:OCENY) today demonstrated the latest e-passport required security feature in conjunction with its successful Oce ID-Star CSR (1) (Customer Service Representative) A person who handles a customer's request regarding a bill, account changes or service or merchandise ordered. The U.S. government requires some countries to add biometric identification to passports using RFID tags for their citizens to visit without a visa. U.S. diplomats and State Department employees are in the process of being issued new U.S. RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) A data collection technology that uses electronic tags for storing data. The tag, also known as an "electronic label," "transponder" or "code plate," is made up of an RFID chip attached to an antenna.  passports. Other citizens will receive them when applying for new passports starting in the spring. The State Department plans to produce more than 1 million e-Passports by the end of 2005. By 2006, it expects all new passports to feature the special microchips, according to Angela Aggeler, a spokeswoman for the agency's Bureau of Consular Affairs The Bureau of Consular Affairs is a bureau of the United States Department of State within that department's management office. The mission of the Bureau is to administer laws, formulate regulations and implement policies relating to the broad range of consular services and . E-Passports and other travel documents containing RFID chips (as defined by the ICAO standard) will become compulsory worldwide in all major countries within the next 3-5 years.

The new Oce ID-Star CSR ePassport Option adds a high speed RFID-reader module. The module is completely integrated with the Oce ID Star 4054 CSR and will be sold as an optional upgrade for the standard reader. It is designed to capture all biometrical information stored on a chip in the upcoming new generation of e-Passports and other travel documents. The RFID module is integrated seamlessly into the ID Star CSR so that reading data from the chip in the ID document under inspection takes place in parallel with the capture of images from the personal-data page of the ID document. This means that the document only has to be laid on the reader once for both the optical and the electronic reading and data capture processes to be performed. The RFID read function thus does not impair the reader's ergonomic 'one motion usage' in practice. The application also helps ascertain that the data of both the optical and the RFID readings originate from the same document.

To facilitate integration with the customer's software applications, functions are summarized and made available in libraries. This enables the reader to be addressed easily, as well as providing straightforward accessing of document data. These libraries can be integrated in Windows 2000 and Windows XP applications.

As the international bodies responsible for standardisation of electronic ID documents (in particular ICAO) have not yet finalized their definitions of standards, it is not now possible to specify the entire performance scope of the reader with the RFID module. The exact scope of functions will be configured according to the relevant bodies' respective definitions (ICAO / ISO (1) See ISO speed.

, and others, for instance the EU) and, where needed, also project- and country-specific. The e-Passport Option is planned to ship in Q3 2005.

More than 2,000 Oce ID Star devices are in operation worldwide, deployed for mission critical projects in border control, airports, embassies, consulates and passport authorities. The Oce ID Star is used to help manage country border controls in over 15 countries including: Argentina, Austria, Brunei, Denmark, Estonia, Great Britain, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Romania, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Turkey and Vietnam. It is also used for quality assurance of consulate issued documents in Hungary, Switzerland and the Ukraine.
