Macworld Conference & Expo is celebrating the introduction of its new Music and Audio Special Interest Area with daily one-hour concerts by well-known musical groups and a special music keynote as part of the comprehensive conference program.

Offering both professional and amateur musicians an outstanding opportunity to learn more about creating music with their computers, the new Music and Audio Special Interest Area will showcase the latest products and tools for music and audio creations, production, processing, mastering, CD authoring, MP3 publishing, music education and networking.

Fast) is a synthesizer expert and composer, and is regarded as one of the most important electronic music innovators of the late 1970s. Larry Fast is best known for his series of pioneering electronic music albums recorded under the project name SYNERGY. On two associated projects in the late 1970's at AT&T Bell Laboratories (now Lucent Technologies) Fast worked with direct-to-disk digital recording, sampling and resynthesis, computer control of synthesizers, computer generated FM synthesis A technique for generating the sounds of musical instruments for MIDI playback. Used in cellphones for ringtones and low-end sound cards, FM synthesis does not create sound as faithfully as wavetable synthesis, which uses actual samples of the instruments. Through his technology connections, Fast helped introduce the first Fairlight CMI The Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument) was the first polyphonic digital sampling synthesizer. It was designed in 1978 by the founders of Fairlight, Peter Vogel and Kim Ryrie, and based on a dual microprocessor computer designed by Tony Furse in Sydney, Australia.  synthesizer/sampler on the third Peter Gabriel solo album in 1979-80. Fast was also involved with the development of microcomputer control of synthesizers. He developed his own computer software used both in live performances with Peter Gabriel and on the ambient SYNERGY "Computer Experiments Volume One" (1980). Subsequent projects used the Universal Synthesizer Interface which later evolved into MIDI. This assured that Fast would be one of the earliest MIDI proponents. Fast currently beta tests A test of new or revised hardware or software that is performed by users at their facilities under normal operating conditions. Beta testing follows alpha testing. Vendors of packaged software often offer their customers the opportunity of beta testing new releases or versions, and the  computer programs for many music software companies, test flying their MIDI and audio software on his many projects.
