Supports the MCF5206e microprocessor -- the best

price/performance value in the ColdFire(TM) family

Answering the industry's ever-growing need for products offering ease of design, faster time-to-market and affordable pricing, Motorola Monday introduced a new development kit designed to provide engineers a low cost, quick evaluation solution for Motorola's high performance MCF5206e ColdFire microprocessor.

The package, entitled M5206eLITE(TM), will be available for a limited time period and provides the comprehensive support that design engineers require for development and evaluation of the MCF5206e ColdFire microprocessor in their system application.

The kit includes evaluation copies of third-party software tools and software tools provided by Motorola which allow current 68K users to evaluate the ColdFire microprocessor using their existing code.

The system provides a total hardware and software solution for system development including an MCF5206e evaluation board with a ROM monitor incorporated, evaluation copies of multiple third-party development tools including compilers, debuggers and real-time operating systems, literature on software and hardware support tools, BDM BDM Black Divorced Male

In addition, this evaluation package is supported with sample code which can be downloaded from the ColdFire microprocessor web-site at http://www.motorola.com/ColdFire. The kit has a suggested resale price of $199 (US) and will be available while stocks last.

"We are seeing more and more customers choose ColdFire products for their 32-bit embedded applications," said Martin Burns Martin "Farmer" Burns (February 15 1861 - 1937) was a world champion "catch-as-catch-can" wrestler as well as wrestling coach and teacher. "This development kit is a perfect enabler for those who are designing with the MCF5206e microprocessor, a device that we expect to have large and widespread adoption in the market."

M5206eLITE Evaluation Board Package

The M5206eLITE evaluation board is a versatile single board computer based on the MCF5206e ColdFire microprocessor. It may be used as a powerful microprocessor based controller in a variety of applications. With the addition of a terminal, it serves as a complete microcomputer system for development/evaluation, training and educational use.

The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  DRAM, and access to the world-class ColdFire debug module, the M5206eLITE board gives designers the hardware they need to begin developing their systems.

To further enhance these capabilities, the kit includes software from Motorola and third-parties along with complementary hardware to fully evaluate the MCF5206e microprocessor.

In addition, an emulation library for unimplemented 68K instructions is also available. This complete package includes all the components for realising an MCF5206e design quickly and easily.

The third-party tool suppliers supporting this development package include:

In addition to the evaluation board and software, the kit also contains a debug cable and literature. The cable gives access to all the registers within the MCF5206e microprocessor as well as external memory.

The literature consists of the MCF5206e ColdFire User's Manual, the ColdFire Family Programmer's Reference Manual, the M5206eLITE evaluation board User's Manual, 68K/ColdFire documentation CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

MCF5206e Microprocessor Overview

The MCF5206e microprocessor combines a Version 2 ColdFire core with the existing peripherals of the MCF5206 microprocessor such as DRAM controller, timers, parallel and serial interfaces. In addition, the MCF5206e microprocessor also boasts a multiply/accumulate unit (MAC), a hardware divider and two channels of DMA (1) (Digital Media Adapter) See digital media hub.

The superior performance levels of the MCF5206e microprocessor are achieved by leveraging single cycle access to a 4 KByte instruction cache and an 8 KByte SRAM See static RAM.

By implementing the MCF5206e microprocessor in advanced 0.35(mu) technology, and retaining the same package used by the MCF5206 microprocessor, the MCF5206e microprocessor can be offered at a much lower price, resulting in an aggressive new price/performance point for the Version 2 ColdFire core.

The MCF5206e microprocessor maintains the ColdFire strategy of increasing performance and integration while reducing cost, boasting 50 MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second.  performance at 54MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  and delivering up to three times the performance of Motorola's MCF5206 microprocessor and up to six times the performance of the MC68340 microprocessor.

As the world's number one producer of embedded processors, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector offers multiple DigitalDNA(TM) solutions which enable its customers to create new business opportunities in the consumer, networking and computing, transportation, and wireless communications markets.
