Next Generation Technology To Spur Multimedia Classroom Production and Education

Kaleida's mission is to provide the premiere platform for interactive multimedia applications. Its vision is to help developers excel in two crucial dimensions, creative range and development efficiency. Consisting of the Kaleida Media Player(tm), the ScriptX(tm) language, and application development and authoring tools, the Kaleida platform combines the technologies of object-oriented programming object-oriented programming, a modular approach to computer program (software) design. Each module, or object, combines data and procedures (sequences of instructions) that act on the data; in traditional, or procedural, programming the data are separated from the , dynamic languages, and digital media for the first time.

At the heart of the platform is the Kaleida Media Player which allows developers to write one version of an application that can run across multiple operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. . Developers use the ScriptX Language, a complete object-oriented programming solution, to create applications for the Kaleida Media Player. Kaleida's educational product, the ScriptX Course Kit, enables independent learning of ScriptX basics and broad teaching of object-oriented programming and multimedia concepts. As a result, educators can expand course offerings by integrating ScriptX and next generation multimedia concepts into computer science, instructional technology and new media curricula.

Kaleida's participation in New Media Centers will encourage multimedia production by teachers and students because the company's leading edge technology is designed to free developers from the constraints of one platform. Further, it extends curricula by equipping students with object oriented programming skills and preparing them for tomorrow's jobs. Since most schools are multi-platform environments, teachers and students will now be free to develop applications and titles on any platform and deliver them to any system campus-wide or intra-campus.

As an example, a medical professor could create an interactive multimedia tutorial which explains transmission of the HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States.  virus . Medical students would be able to access the interactive lesson via a CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

on their personal computer. Health care workers at the university hospital would then be able to access the tutorial through the hospital's mainframe computer. Taking it one step further, patients could access the information through portable interactive kiosks throughout the hospital. To keep the users of the information current, professors could then distribute monthly modules of the latest tutorials over the Internet. Although many people are benefiting from the information and interacting with it through a variety of distribution means, the professor only had to author the multimedia lesson once.

The Organizations

Kaleida Labs, Inc. is an independent, privately held firm, co-owned by Apple Computer, Inc., and IBM Corporation. Its mission is to create the premiere platform for the development of interactive multimedia applications. Kaleida's products, the ScriptX(tm) Language Kit and the Kaleida Media Player(tm), have been shipping to customers since December 1994.

First announced in October 1993, New Media Centers works to empower educators to change the way people learn. The organization maximizes students' learning potential and educators' efficacy through the most innovative new media tools and technologies. Campus centers formed through the organization use state-of-the art technology to incorporate interactive media into a multitude of campus teaching and learning activities. These include developing media-based curriculum materials for a range of academic disciplines; training students and faculty; and conducting workshops and seminars for elementary and secondary teachers and other community members. Today, NMC has over 50 operating hands-on campus technology centers in the United States and in Taiwan, Finland and Canada.
