New Macsyma 2.2 math software understands plain English.

ARLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 1997--While most math software offers users only arcane command language, new Macsyma(R) 2.2 software lets users enter a question/sentence in their own words on the command line and responds with executable "MathTips(tm)" on how to solve the problem.

For example, "Show me how to find the roots of my polynomial polynomial, mathematical expression which is a finite sum, each term being a constant times a product of one or more variables raised to powers. With only one variable the general form of a polynomial is a0xn+a ?" produces a list of problems/solutions with textual descriptions and corresponding input commands. The commands can usually be executed without typing anything. "We believe Macsyma 2.2 can halve the time and energy required to solve problems with math software," said Macsyma Inc. President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Richard Petti pet·ti

. Macsyma 2.2 runs on Intel PCs with Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. . Macsyma 2.2 began shipping in January 1997.

The speed of Macsyma 2.2 is now competitive with numerical-only packages. Macsyma's new add-on product, NumKit(tm), speeds up most large numerical matrix operations. NumKit, which is based on the LAPACK LAPACK Linear Algebra Package  library available from the U.S. Department of Energy, adds automatic storage management and subroutine A group of instructions that perform a specific task. A large subroutine might be called a "module" or "procedure." Subroutine is somewhat of a dated term, but it is still quite valid.  dispatching based on data type of input and is fully integrated into the Macsyma environment.

Besides the MathTips Advisor, Macsyma 2.2 incorporates many other uniquely friendly features. The help system includes fill-in command templates that prompt users to compose their own commands; over 1,000 menu-accessible, executable examples; a topic browser; and thousands of help topics connected by hyperlinks. Macsyma's ability to autoload virtually all external libraries (including user-written libraries) also contributes to its ease of use. The DataViewer(tm) allows Macsyma users to import, export, view, edit, analyze, and plot large numerical data Numerical data (or quantitative data) is data measured or identified on a numerical scale. Numerical data can be analysed using statistical methods, and results can be displayed using tables, charts, histograms and graphs.  in the scientific notebooks. Macsyma Inc. encourages independent parties to perform controlled tests to quantify the amount of time savings Macsyma 2.2 delivers.

Macsyma 2.2 also incorporates significant improvements in mathematics, graphics and text formatting styles, and hypertext navigation to external documents and URL URL

Macsyma 2.2 uses the same scientific notebook interface as PDEase2D(tm), a companion product for finite element analysis Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computer simulation technique used in engineering analysis. It uses a numerical technique called the finite element method (FEM). There are many finite element software packages, both free and proprietary. . Macsyma 2.2 software can be used to pre-process complicated equations for solution by PDEase2D and to post-process data generated by PDEase2D.

The commercial price for Macsyma 2.2 with NumKit is $669 ($599 without NumKit).
