New MPEG-2 DTV Software Video Encoder Combines Speed, Quality, Cost-Effectiveness.PRINCETON, NJ--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1998-- Sarnoff DTV (Digital TeleVision) Transmitting TV using digital signals. The major DTV standards are ATSC (North America), DVB (Europe) and ISDB (Japan). All three use MPEG-2 video compression and Dolby Digital audio compression. DVB and ISDB also include MPEG audio compression. SoftCoder(TM) Fits on Floppy, Runs On Popular Operating Systems Sarnoff Corporation has announced its DTV SoftCoder(TM), a software-based MPEG-2 encoder for TV and movie studios, video production companies, and video editing equipment providers. DTV SoftCoder, which is being introduced at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas, April 6-9, encodes Standard or High Definition digital video for VCDs, DVDs, Web servers, and other digital media with better picture quality than other software-based approaches while significantly improving compression efficiency and data bandwidth. The new product runs under Windows 95, IRIX A Unix-based operating system from SGI that is used in its computer systems from desktop to supercomputer. It is an enhanced version of Unix System V Release 4. IRIX integrates the X Window system with OpenGL, creating the first real time 3D X environment. , Solaris, or Sun OS operating systems. The subject of over a dozen Sarnoff patents or patents pending, DTV SoftCoder also produces up to a 20% bit-rate reduction in the resulting bitstream and order-of-magnitude decreases in computation and memory bandwidth compared to traditional software implementations. "Sarnoff proprietary technology allows studio users of DTV SoftCoder to get much better picture quality than they could obtain from typical real-time hardware encoders," said Ya-Qin Zhang, Director of the Multimedia Technology Laborataory at Sarnoff Corporation. "Compared to other state-of-the-art software encoders, our DTV SoftCoder is faster and less expensive. It offers the best combination of cost, speed, and picture performance." The DTV SoftCoder software is available for sale or license to individuals, equipment makers, studios and networks. Compact Code, Powerful Performance DTV SoftCoder fits on a single standard floppy diskette. It offers a comprehensive encoding toolset to provide flexibility, modularity, and enhanced performance, including: -- Noise Reduction Filter to substantially cut noise, which can be visible on screen as obvious pixelation This article is about the graphics artifact. For the stop motion animation technique, see pixilation. For the censorship method, see pixelization. In computer graphics, pixelation -- Scene Change Detection that reduces the tendency to add temporary color "blockiness" to a new scene, by automatically watching for differences in luminance to mark a switch from one scene to another. -- Rate Controller and Mode Decision, which use proprietary approaches to deliver 0.5 to 1.0 dB improvements in visual quality over MPEG-2 Test Mode 5 implementations. -- Motion Estimator, based on Sarnoff's proprietary binary Pyramid fast search algorithm, which dramatically reduces complexity and memory bandwidth to greatly increase encoding speed. The DTV SoftCoder architecture is DSP-friendly, and supports multiple profiles and applications, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, Main Profile for SDTV (Standard Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards with 480 lines of resolution.
