:LHSPF) (EASDAQ See European Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation. :LHSP-ED) (L&H) today released four new speech technology toolkits that help developers easily add advanced speech and language capabilities to their applications. L&H's offerings represent some of the industry's most feature-rich set of toolkits for integrating speech and language technology into a broad range of applications, ranging from office automation to games, Web applications, databases and other software.

Lernout & Hauspie, a worldwide market leader in speech and linguistic technologies, products and services, will demonstrate the four new toolkits and offer special pricing today through Thursday at the Software Development '98 Show, booth number 202, at the Washington Convention Center The Washington Convention Center has been the name of two convention centers in Washington, D.C. The old Washington Convention Center was located at 909 H Street NW and was in use from 1983 until 2004.  in Washington, D.C.

"Our goal is to provide application developers with quick, easy access to the unparalleled breadth and depth of technology that L&H has created over the years," said Bert Van Colie, senior vice president of corporate R&D, L&H. "By working closely with developers, and allowing them to leverage our superior technology, we believe we can continue to offer the market the most diverse applications available today."

The toolkits are expected to enable a new generation of standards-compliant software with capabilities such as speech-activated multi-dimensional database search engines and multi-lingual voice command and control of Windows and Java applications.

The four new toolkits include:

"By adapting our end-user technology into standards-compliant toolkits, we can help developers integrate those functions into their applications without a lot of coding and customization. This helps them give their customers what they want without expending a lot of resources outside their area of expertise."

Quest: advanced data search and analysis made easy

The Quest SDK enables Windows and Unix developers to embed language-based search and analysis engines into applications running on top of standard databases, such as Oracle and Sybase. It combines sophisticated search and analysis capabilities, comparable to a high-end online analytical processing Online Analytical Processing, or OLAP (IPA: /ˈoʊlæp/), is an approach to quickly provide answers to analytical queries that are multidimensional in nature.  tool, with the easy use of a keyword search engine.

Quest's "fuzzy logic fuzzy logic, a multivalued (as opposed to binary) logic developed to deal with imprecise or vague data. Classical logic holds that everything can be expressed in binary terms: 0 or 1, black or white, yes or no; in terms of Boolean algebra, everything is in one set or ," which searches for information through association, enables users to conduct high-level data search and analysis without the knowledge of database structures that other advanced analysis tools demand. Its ability to make associations ensures that Quest almost always returns an answer, unlike the "no matches found" message more limited search engines often return.

Quest appears as a form on users' screens. Users fill in parameters that are each attached to a database field and a Knowledge Map that can make associations beyond a query's literal meaning. If certain parameters are more important, the user can assign higher relative weighting and Quest will search the database accordingly. Applications that integrate L&H Voice Xpress SDK can create text from continuous speech and can react on spoken commands through any close-talk microphone.

The L&H Voice Xpress SDK offers more functionality than any other comparable toolkit. For example, the broadest range of base vocabularies and language models in the industry, and vocabulary development Vocabulary development is the process whereby speakers of language enhance their working vocabularies with new words.

The average persons' vocabulary consists of 10,000 words, regardless of native tongue. Usually, this represents a mere fraction of the lexis of that language.

The SDK currently provides support for UK and US English and will support other languages and specialty domains as they become available in the L&H Voice Xpress product line. These features enable L&H Voice Xpress to achieve 95 percent accuracy or better, meaning fewer mistaken or misunderstood words. In addition, L&H Voice Xpress SDK plans to support SAPI 4 when it becomes available. With L&H Voice Xpress SDK, Windows application developers can create speech-enabled applications that take advantage of state of the art large vocabulary continuous speech recognition technology.

ASR1600/M: providing high accuracy command & control for PC applications

The L&H ASR1600/M SDK enables Windows developers to integrate speech command and control functions into their applications to provide accurate recognition across a broad range of PCs - from 486s to Pentiums. In addition, proprietary signal processing techniques provide accurate recognition across a wide range of acoustic environments and microphones, including noise robust inexpensive desktop microphones or even microphones in laptops.
