New Japanese Presses Have Hybrid Clamping.

Three Japanese suppliers have introduced machines with hybrid direct-clamping mechanisms (not toggles) that combine the benefits of hydraulic and servo-electric power. All these machines use electric motors for the opening and closing strokes, and small hydraulic cylinders to apply clamping pressure. The clamp mechanisms are actually hydromechanical, since after the mold closes, a mechanical locking mechanism engages the ball-screw ram. Energy-saving electric motors are said to provide faster acceleration/deceleration and greater position accuracy. Direct hydraulic clamping provides finer pressure control, more uniform pressure distribution over the mold, delicate mold protection, and greater die-height range.

* The example pictured here is the hybrid clamp of Sodick's new Tuparl EH Series from 20 to 220 tons. (Sodick, Inc. is in Torrance, Calif.) It also has an electric ejector ejector

and new LM (linear motion) platen guides, which are said to give superior alignment, since the platen does not ride on the tiebars. Like standard Tuparl machines, EH models have two-stage injection, but the angled extruder has an AC servo motor to save energy. New super-high-speed models for thin-wall molding have a small accumulator mounted right on the injection plunger (photo). It can provide 1500 mm/sec injection speed.

* Meiki Co. (represented by Meiki America Corp., Elk Grove Village Elk Grove Village, village (1990 pop. 33,429), Cook and Du Page counties, NE Ill., a suburb of Chicago; inc. 1956. With a population of c.100 at the time of its establishment on open farmland, the village has grown dramatically and steadily, largely because of its , Ill.) has a similar hybrid mechanism on its new Nadem 800-DM and 1200-DM models (88 and 132 tons). They have six-stage clamp-pressure control, said to be useful for molding acrylic Fresnel lenses with injection-compression. It also has a patented spruereturn mechanism, that recycles the sprue sprue, chronic disorder of the small intestine caused by impaired absorption of fat and other nutrients. Other features are a new nozzle shutter plate built into a die spacer between the mold and platen. Powered by an air cylinder air cylinder can mean:-

Plasticating and injection are all-electric. Last, a new quick-change nozzle can be replaced in one-sixth the usual time.
