1. the study and interpretation of symbols. Also called symbolism.
.

PDF417 is a type of bar code symbology used in shipment tracking within the automotive industry. A new General Motors Corp. label standard requires that both Intermec-developed Code 39 and PDF417 bar code labels appear on shipments of parts and supplies.

The 1551PDF has a high-speed engine capable of both linear and PDF scanning. It completes Intermec's popular Sabre family of 1551 scanners, providing a rugged design suitable for the heavy industrial environments common in the automotive industry. It is one of a number of Intermec products, including terminals and computers, to be introduced to support customers who need PDF417 scanning capabilities.

PDF417 and other 2D symbologies encode more information in a single bar code.

"It's obvious that our customers want to do more with fewer scans," said Intermec Data Capture Product Manager Tracy Skerritt. "To support this initiative, we've added the 1551PDF, the latest member of our product family, which provides PDF scanning for customers in rugged environments."

Intermec has been offering state-of-the-art automated data collection technology to the automotive industry for more than 25 years. Its suite of products includes mobile computers, printers, labels and other scanning equipment.
