New IDC White Paper Examines Need for Reputation Services for Email Security.

Paper States Commtouch Provides "Security in the Gray Zone"

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Commtouch (Nasdaq:CTCH CTCH Common Traffic Channel ) today announced the publication of an IDC white paper entitled Commtouch Reputation Service: Fighting in the Gray Zone, authored by Dan Yachin. The white paper outlines the need for enterprises and service providers for new solutions to cope with the recent surge in unwanted and malicious email, and discusses emerging reputation-based filtering concepts that can help reduce the volumes of spam E-mail that is not requested. Also known as "unsolicited commercial e-mail" (UCE), "unsolicited bulk e-mail" (UBE), "gray mail" and just plain "junk mail," the term is both a noun (the e-mail message) and a verb (to send it).  at the perimeter, thus reducing network overhead.

"There is an immediate market need for accurate, trustworthy reputation services, in order to block the rising tide Noun 1. rising tide - the occurrence of incoming water (between a low tide and the following high tide); "a tide in the affairs of men which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune" -Shakespeare

For example, one might see products packaged differently for the UK, EMEA and Asia Pacific markets.  Emerging Technologies at IDC. "There are high barriers to entry for any company that wishes to offer effective reputation services. These include deep knowledge of email security, and access to vast historical and real-time information about global email traffic. An offering such as Commtouch's Reputation Service can enable organizations to eliminate the vast majority of unwanted traffic at the perimeter, providing significant savings in bandwidth and IT resources."

The document discusses that previously accepted reputation methods such as Real-time Black Lists (RBLs), whitelisting and static reputation services are ineffective in the face of traffic generated by zombies Zombies

Zombies are typically home computers that have been infected by Trojan malware (MALicious softWARE) Software designed to destroy, aggravate and otherwise make life unhappy. Home computers often change their IP address (i.e. the identifying number that indicates location on the Internet) based on a dynamic system with their Internet Service Provider Internet service provider (ISP)

"Only a real-time solution can address today's state of affairs, where the originating IP addresses of spam-senders are changing dynamically," said Amir Lev lev-,

"After participating in a massive, distributed spam attack, the zombie A computer that has been covertly taken over in order to perform some nefarious task. It is estimated that millions of PCs around the world have been compromised and, under the control of a third party, routinely transmit messages unbeknownst to the user.  can go into hibernation until the next outbreak, by which time its IP address will already be different. So the reputation service must recognize the spam-sending computer at the moment it becomes active on the Internet."

Commtouch Reputation Service is based on the billions of email messages Commtouch analyzes from all over the globe each week. On an ongoing basis, Commtouch probes key global traffic sources and examines email messages with its Recurrent Pattern Detection[TM] technology to identify spam and malware outbreaks. This data is fed continuously into the Reputation Service database, which is used to block unwanted email at the perimeter of the organization.

Commtouch licenses its Reputation Service - as well as separate services for Anti-Spam and Zero-Hour Virus Outbreak Protection - to messaging security vendors and managed service providers.
