New High-Performance Deflection Controllers From Philips Semiconductors Reduce Component Count and Simplify Circuit Alignment.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1997--Philips Semiconductors today announced two new CRT (1) (C RunTime) See runtime library.

(2) (Cathode Ray Tube) A vacuum tube used as a display screen in a computer monitor or TV. The viewing end of the tube is coated with phosphors, which emit light when struck by electrons.
deflection controllers, significantly reducing the component count and number of alignments required in autosync monitors while maintaining excellent picture quality.

Both ICs are suitable for use in autosync monitors operating at line scan frequencies range between 30 to 90 kHz. They also accommodate Japanese 24-kHz modes.

4858, targeted for 14-and 15-inch monitors, and the TDA4855, targeted for 17-inch monitors, feature full autosync capabilities for line-scan frequencies up to 100 kHz, DC controlled adjustment of picture positioning and geometry, and closed-loop control of feedback or feed-forward B+ converters. Both ICs also feature automatic start-up and switch-off sequences to ensure the safe operation of CRT drive components, plus a shut-down mode for X-ray protection.

"The high level of functional integration in the TDA4855 and TDA4858 not only simplifies the design process and lowers assembly costs for CRT manufacturers," said Alois Kliner, product marketing manager for these ICs. "Their built-in soft-start, power-down and fault protection modes also improve equipment reliability," he added.

The TDA4855 and TDA4858 accept separate horizontal and vertical TTL-level sync inputs, a single composite sync input or a composite video A video color format that combines all three YUV video signals into one channel. The first video signal to include color, composite video transmits brightness/luma (Y) and colors/chroma (U and V) over one cable. NTSC, PAL and SECAM television sets have composite video inputs.  input. Initial locking of their on-chip line oscillator oscillator

to these inputs is performed by a frequency detector, after which a PLL PLL - phase-locked loop  takes over to provide accurate frequency control. This two-stage locking process, coupled with automatic picture blanking during the frequency searching, allows rapid switching from one screen mode to another without visible picture bounce.

DC controlled picture geometry adjustments provided in the TDA4855 and TDA4858 include vertical and horizontal picture size and positioning, S-correction, EW-parabola and trapezium trapezium /tra·pe·zi·um/ (-um) [L.]

correction. For consistent picture geometry, their S-correction and EW-parabola outputs are re-adjusted automatically whenever vertical picture height and positioning are changed, and their EW-parabola amplitude can be set to a constant level or made proportional to the line frequency.

The TDA4858 has been specially designed to produce a very smooth top to its EW-parabola waveform in order to eliminate ringing in the CRT's horizontal drive circuits.

Both deflection controllers output low-level control signals that can be used to add DC adjustment of parameters such as EW corner and pin balance and vertical focus, tilt and linearity. All of the geometry adjustments required in high-performance monitors are therefore implemented in a single chip plus a few external components. Comprehensive facilities have been provided in the TDA4855 and TDA4858 to protect the picture tube and its deflection drive components. Controlled rise-time of the supply voltage into the devices' 9.2 V to 16 V operating Vcc range progressively activates the internal circuits to guarantee that the screen remains fully blanked until the autosync function, the horizontal/vertical drive outputs and the B+ drive outputs are operational. Similar sequencing during power-down ensures that the screen is blanked before the drive outputs deactivate de·ac·ti·vate

The TDA4855 and TDA4858 are both housed in 32-pin shrink-DIP packages. The price for the TDA4855 is US $3.12 per unit and the price for the TDA4858 is US $2.28 per unit in quantities of 100,000 or more.
