New Heat-Resistive Post-tensioning Tendons From VSturctural Offer Enhanced Structural and Safety Benefits.Business Editors NOTE TO MEDIA: Photo is available in a Smart News Release(TM) on Business Wire's Home Page at www.businesswire.com and at www.newstream.com BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2001 VStructural, LLC (Logical Link Control) See "LANs" under data link protocol. LLC - Logical Link Control (VSL VSL Vessel (shipping) VSL Value of Statistical Life VSL Virtual Software Library VSL Variable Speed of Light (theoretical cosmology/physics) VSL Vector Statistical Library VSL Straight Line Velocity ) introduces heat-resistive post-tensioning tendons for use in structural applications. These tendons are specially designed to promote fire protection for bridges, parking garages, and other structures where the risk of a potential fire is a concern. VSL's innovative heat-resistive post-tensioning tendons have been developed to mitigate the detrimental thermal effects of fire on the strength of the prestressing steel. Each tendon consists of one or more steel prestressing strands coated with a proprietary intumescent material. This coating provides a significantly greater degree of protection to the strand in the event of a fire. The tendon design, unique in the industry, incorporates a layer of reinforced intumescent coating between an inner and outer layer of high-density polyethylene (HDPE HDPE abbr. high-density polyethylene ) sheathing. The intumescent coating, when heated sufficiently, swells and creates an insulating "char", protecting the underlying substrate from fire. The coating is a proprietary material, manufactured by PPG Industries, Inc. A layer of corrosion-inhibiting grease is applied directly to the steel, thereby providing corrosion protection. The heat-resistive quality of VSL's new post-tensioning tendons has been verified in independent testing carried out by Southwest Research Institute Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, is one of the oldest and largest independent, nonprofit, applied research and development (R&D) organizations in the United States. Founded in 1947 by Thomas Slick, Jr. in San Antonio, Texas “San Antonio” redirects here. For other uses, see San Antonio (disambiguation). San Antonio is the second most populous city in Texas, the third most populous metropolitan area in Texas, and is the seventh most populous city in the United States. As of the 2006 U.S. . Furnace testing was conducted on tendon specimens to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of the intumescent coating. These tests demonstrated the effectiveness of the protection provided by this system. This new product is the first heat-resistive external post-tensioning tendon commercially available in the U.S. market. It's offered by VStructural LLC, a provider and installer of post-tensioning system components for new and existing structures.
