New HP Modules Provide Comprehensive Connectivity for New and Existing Workgroups.PALO ALTO Palo Alto, city, California Palo Alto (păl`ō ăl`tō), city (1990 pop. 55,900), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1894. Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1996-- Hewlett-Packard Company, the leader in networked systems for workgroups, today announced two new modules for the HP AdvanceStack Switch 2000 -- an FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. module and a four-port 10Base-FL module -- that are designed to provide cost-effective, comprehensive connectivity for new and existing networks while protecting customers' investments. The AdvanceStack Switch 2000 is a segment switch solution for midsized workgroups. Its support for most standard technologies -- 10Base-T, 10Base-FL, 100VG and FDDI -- makes it the industry's most modular and flexible segment switch for workgroups. This flexibility enables customers to customize their networks, according to according to prep. 1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians. 2. The AdvanceStack Switch 2000 supports migration to a fully 100Mbps switching solution, combining the scalability of a 1Gbps switching backplane An interconnecting device that has sockets for printed circuit boards to plug into. Passive and Active Although resistors may be used, a "passive" backplane adds no processing in the circuit. with the flexibility of the widest range of standard LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. interfaces. "HP network products make it simpler than ever to build a total network solution," said Gary McAnally, general manager of HP's Workgroup Networks Division. "HP's long-term direction is to continue to support our customers' need to migrate to higher-performance networks and to support a wide range of network connectivity, including 10Base-FL and FDDI." FDDI MODULE FOR THE ADVANCESTACK SWITCH 2000 The new FDDI module for the AdvanceStack Switch 2000 allows customers to connect to new and existing FDDI rings. With FDDI connectivity, the AdvanceStack Switch 2000 now provides flexible switch connectivity for multiple high-speed technologies. The FDDI module fits into one of the six universal slots in the AdvanceStack Switch 2000 base unit. Up to two FDDI modules can be installed in the switch with any combination of four-port 10Base-T modules, four-port 10Base-FL modules and two-port 100VG modules. For example, one FDDI module could be installed with five two-port 100VG modules, or two FDDI modules could be installed with four four-port 10Base-T modules. The FDDI module for the AdvanceStack Switch 2000 supports connectivity for Ethernet and 100VG at introduction, and later, is expected to support 100Base-T. The configuration for the FDDI module will be set automatically. The module supports IP fragmentation Breaking an IP datagram (packet) into pieces in order to be sent across a transmission link with a frame size smaller than the datagram. Performed in a router, the header of the original IP packet is replicated with minor changes to each of the fragments. and SMT (1) (Surface Mount Technology) See surface mount. (2) (Station ManagemenT) An FDDI network management protocol that provides direct management. Only one node requires the software. SMT - Station Management 7.3(1), the latest in manageability for FDDI. 10BASE-FL MODULE FOR THE ADVANCESTACK SWITCH 2000 The new four-port 10Base-FL module enables customers to connect to existing Ethernet fiber hubs to improve performance in existing Ethernet networks. The new module is fully interoperable with all existing HP 10Mbps fiber hubs and industry-compatible fiber-optic interfaces. The 10Base-FL module gives users a simple, clean switch interface to fiber networks without requiring that they use third-party kits to convert from 10Base-T to 10Base-FL. Because this solution has fewer parts that can fail, customers are assured of better reliability. The four-port 10Base-FL module for the AdvanceStack Switch 2000 fits into one of the six slots of the Switch 2000. Up to six four-port 10Base-FL modules can be inserted into the Switch 2000 for up to 24 10Base-FL connections. The 10Base-FL module for the AdvanceStack Switch 2000 will support connectivity for 10Base-T, 100VG and FDDI at introduction, and later, is expected to support 100Base-T. ADVANCESTACK SWITCH 2000 MANAGEABILITY The AdvanceStack Switch 2000 also supports an unparalleled level of network-management capability. It now has advanced manageability via HP's new AdvanceStack Assistant -- announced separately today -- which now comes with all AdvanceStack switches and network-management hardware as a complete network-management solution. Through AdvanceStack Assistant's drag-and-drop interface, AdvanceStack Switch 2000 ports can be configured in up to eight port-based VLAN See virtual LAN. VLAN - Virtual Local Area Network groups. It provides an "all networks, all ports" view that makes the AdvanceStack Switch 2000 as easy to manage as a hub. AdvanceStack Assistant delivers networkwide traffic monitoring, top-talkers data to help with switch placement and optimization and accurate network-topology mapping. These features are unmatched innovations in the management of switched networks. U.S. PRICES AND AVAILABILITY The HP AdvanceStack Switch 2000 FDDI module is expected to be available Sept. 1, and the AdvanceStack Switch 2000 10Base-F module is expected to be available Oct. 1 through HP's worldwide network of authorized computer dealers, resellers and distributors.
