It is the optical equivalent of electronics, and the two technologies coexist in such innovations as optoelectronic integrated circuits.  and microwave technology solutions, today announced the addition of a new line of receivers for test and measurement applications. The new Models 15XX-B receivers have a bandwidth of 12 gigahertz One billion cycles per second. See GHz.

"These DC-coupled 12-GHz receivers are a natural extension of our current line of leading detectors that span the range of general-purpose low-frequency, high-gain devices to ultrahigh-speed 45-GHz detectors," said Dr. Nadim Maluf, vice president of the Photonics Tools and Instruments product group of New Focus, Inc. "We continue to grow our strong portfolio of high-performance opto-electronic devices with the introduction of these receivers."

The Models 15XX-B DC-coupled 12-GHz receivers come with either a single-mode (9-micron) or multimode (62.5-micron) fiber input. These receivers contain either a gallium-arsenide (GaAs) detector for wavelengths from 400-900 nanometers or an indium-gallium-arsenide (InGaAs) detector for wavelengths from 400-1650 nanometers. They are well-suited for time-domain characterizations of 10-Gbit/s components as well as for frequency-domain measurements. Their DC coupling enables them to be used for extinction-ratio and peak-power measurements.

The receivers are the latest additions to the New Focus photonics tool chest. Photonics products manipulate light - the flow of photons - just like electronic products manipulate electricity - the flow of electrons. Photonics represent a key enabling technology in a variety of industries, including semiconductor IC processing, biotechnology, oil well recovery, industrial sensing and telecommunications.
