"We're very excited to begin using the EyeHear Learning Method in our online ESL classes taken by teachers across the country," said Mary Briden, director of education programs and partnerships, Rio Salado College. "This innovative and effective new tool should provide teachers with excellent preparation to meet the needs of their students."

The EyeHear Learning Method

The EyeHear Learning method is based on the understanding that students need three things to function in a new language: sound, vocabulary and grammar. As its name implies, the EyeHear Learning methodology closely matches the way in which children learn their native language. For example:

-- Words are matched with pictures. Each language has its own

unique sound inventory and many new language learners have

difficulty understanding what they are hearing. With EHL,

students see a picture of each word while they hear the word

being spoken, unlike the traditional translation method, which

can be inhibiting and inefficient.

-- The vocabulary base is learned first. Successful language

learners need to learn as many words as possible, as quickly

as possible. Each chapter teaches a set of 90 vocabulary words

and their appropriate articles (a, an, the). Because

repetition is key for long-term retention of new words, each

word is repeated many times.

-- Words are combined to teach grammar. Because implicit

knowledge of grammatical structure is key to language

function, the EHL method does not teach grammar rules by

explanation or memorization mem·o·rize

grammar by example, helping learners to recognize what sounds

correct, just like native speakers.

Because understanding a language requires adapting to

different speakers, voices and dialects, several native

speakers are used in each lesson.

Impressive Test Results

In the summer of 2002, two studies were conducted at Pima Community College to evaluate the efficacy of the EHL approach compared to current methods used to teach English as a Second Language. CELSA CELSA Cost Estimating for Logistics Support Analysis , a nationwide standardized test A standardized test is a test administered and scored in a standard manner. The tests are designed in such a way that the "questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent" [1]  of reading comprehension and grammar, was used as the standard for comparison. The studies had high school age to adult students using the EyeHear English1 software for 10-12 hours of training. The results are as follows:

-- Study #1: Beginner students used the software randomly, moving

through the chapters and lessons at will. Students gained five

points on CELSA, showing that the EHL method of learning could

be applied less strictly and still get the improved results.

-- Study #2: Advanced students studied the software randomly,

resulting with no change in points gained, but with a

significant increase in vocabulary words gained. Of 24 test

words, students knew 36% of the words before the training and

86% after. Therefore, although advanced students may not

benefit from the EHL English1 CD for improving grammar skills,

it greatly helps in improving vocabulary development Vocabulary development is the process whereby speakers of language enhance their working vocabularies with new words.

The average persons' vocabulary consists of 10,000 words, regardless of native tongue. Usually, this represents a mere fraction of the lexis of that language.

EyeHear Learning Products Meet Standards of "No Child Left Behind" Act of 2001

EHL software products meet the qualifying standards of targeted education funds from the federal "No Child Left Behind" Act of 2001. The act, a landmark in education reform designed to improve student achievement and change the culture of America's schools, places an increased emphasis on reading, especially for young children, enhancing the quality of our nation's teachers, and ensuring that all children in America's schools learn English. The guiding ideas behind the act are that schools and districts work best when they have greater control and flexibility, when scientifically proven teaching methods are employed, and when schools are held accountable for results.
