New Engelhard Films Create Eye-Catching Effects for Packaging, Decorative Products.

Business Editors

ISELIN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2002

A new line of special-effect films from Engelhard (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
: EC) combines the fluorescent effect so popular in the `60s and `70s with eye-catching iridescence iridescence (ĭr'ədĕs`əns), exhibition of rainbowlike colors on a surface. It usually results from interference when light composed of different wavelengths is reflected from the superficial layers of organic or inorganic substances,  to create striking packaging and decorative products.

Fluoridescent(TM) films, the latest extension in Engelhard's Aurora(R) special effect films line, are available in five "retro" colors: "GoGo Grape," "Groovy groov·y

Green," "Mellow Yellow," "Psychedelic Orange" and "Purple Haze."

Especially popular with children and teens, the new films provide attractive accent colors to products intended for all age groups. The films are well suited for a wide variety of applications, including decorative wrapping, ribbon and bows. Fluoridescent films are ideal for conversion to sheets and short rolls for gift-wrapping and tissue or for shredding as decorative packaging material, such as "grass" for gift baskets. The films may also be cut into glitter.

Fluorescence is the property whereby light of certain wavelengths is absorbed and then re-emitted at longer wavelengths. Though the neon effect is obvious in ordinary light, Fluoridescent films, which contain fluorescent dyes, really "pop" under black light.

through light interference--not with pigments or dyes. A unique extrusion process produces more than 100 microlayers at a time, creating a spectacular multicolor effect in a 17-micron-thick film. The complex structure contains alternating layers of different polymers. When white light strikes the film, it is partially reflected from each layer of the film's optical core. The reflected light rays interact to create complementary reflected and transmitted colors, so the film appears to express different colors as a person's viewing angle changes. Varying the number of layers and polymers can influence color density and film strength.
