Moms, dads, brothers and sisters, even the odd cousin or two, helped carry the supplies of incoming students into the residence halls clustered on the east side of campus.

Families and students got started early and continued all day as Eugene police kept traffic moving smartly through nearby intersections. Helpful green-shirted students and staff stood by on sidewalks to answer questions.

A little after 11 a.m., Stan and Michelle Crouse settled into a cozy nook in the new student dorm called the Living Learning Center to wait for their daughter, Colette, who was putting the finishing touches finishing touches finish npl the finishing touches → der letzte Schliff

Also called Romanic, they are spoken by about 670 million people in many parts of the world, but chiefly in Europe and the Western .

Colette said she chose the UO because it "felt right."

She and her mother noticed it before they'd even walked off the plane on their first exploratory trip to Eugene several months ago.

Their seatmates on the flight offered all kinds of help - a truck if they needed assistance on moving-in day, a place to have Thanksgiving dinner The centerpiece of contemporary Thanksgiving in the United States is a large meal, starring a large roasted turkey. All of the dishes in the traditional American version of Thanksgiving Dinner are made from foods native to North America, according to tradition the Pilgrims received these  if Colette couldn't get home for the holiday. The strangers offered names and phone numbers. Call if you need anything, they said.

, her other choice. Back East people seemed to be in a big hurry, and no one really met their eyes.

Looking around her dorm room, blue bedspread in place, black and white abstract art hung above the bed near a poster of the Beatles, Colette said she felt a plethora of emotions. "It's that moment when you've left behind high school and moved on and you're starting a whole new era," she said.

It's too soon to say just how many students are registered for this term, said Michael Eyster, interim vice president for student affairs and director of university housing.

But as of Thursday, they had signed 3,468 housing contracts with students. The school can comfortably house 3,550, Eyster said.

Fall term classes begin Monday.
