Information During Operation Iraqi Freedom

Multiple branches of the military were able to communicate in real-time during Operation Iraqi Freedom as a result of the new Improved Data Modem, IDM (1) See identity management.

systems - to communicate digitally in real-time without relying solely on voice to voice communication. The IDM played an integral role in Iraq as it was utilized in the Apache Longbow longbow

, Kiowa Warrior, and Blackhawk Army helicopters and ground forces.

IDM represents the latest in advanced military technologies designed to remedy communication issues. As a result, soldiers can, for the first time, transmit icons on digital maps and correlate the icons to a continuously pinpointed and tracked target. This strategic advantage was leveraged for more accurate weapons control, quicker attack strategies and fewer friendly fire errors in Iraq.

"IDM is the latest example of our continued success in powering the most technologically advanced military applications," said Bob Morris, vice president of sales and marketing for LynuxWorks. "We've invested substantially in assuring that our products are certified to and conform with the highest government standards."

Importance of Government Standards

To achieve seamless data communication and joint situational awareness, LynxOS provides hard real-time capability and POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX) An IEEE 1003.1 standard that defines the language interface between application programs and the Unix operating system.  conformance required by the IDM. This POSIX conformance allows the IDM to execute a number of GOTS (government-off-the-shelf) packages which require full POSIX process model support as specified by the JTA-A JTA-A Joint Technical Architecture - Army  (which mandates POSIX .1 support), in order to quickly integrate the required GOTS and COTS packages. LynxOS is the only real-time operating system (operating system) Real-Time Operating System - (RTOS) Any operating system where interrupts are guaranteed to be handled within a certain specified maximum time, thereby making it suitable for control of hardware in embedded systems and other time-critical applications.  to have been certified POSIX conformant by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields. . Other RTOSs could offer POSIX compliance, meaning that the vendor has a document stating which POSIX features are supported and which are not, but only LynxOS offers a true, conformant POSIX operating system.

"Since the IDM is mission critical, we required hard real-time deterministic performance. After a thorough investigation of the available alternatives, LynxOS was the logical choice as it was the only real-time operating system to be certified POSIX conformant by the IEEE," said Richard Harrison, vice president of corporate business development at Innovative Concepts. "LynxOS was a critical factor in helping Innovative Concepts achieve interoperability with the tactical Internet, integrated battlespace communications network, and ensure our provided the military with seamless data communication and joint situational awareness."
