New DBMS from Extended Systems Gives Stranded "Xbase Users" A Migration Path To Windows Client/Server; New security features added to leading .DBF Client/Server solution.

BOISE, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 1996--Extended Systems announced today a new Windows Client/Server DBMS (DataBase Management System) Software that controls the organization, storage, retrieval, security and integrity of data in a database. It accepts requests from the application and instructs the operating system to transfer the appropriate data.  with enhanced security and data encryption data encryption, the process of scrambling stored or transmitted information so that it is unintelligible until it is unscrambled by the intended recipient. Historically, data encryption has been used primarily to protect diplomatic and military secrets from foreign  features.

databases. The Advantage database engine offers native support for popular Windows development environments such as Delphi, Visual Basic, Visual C++ and Visual Objects. Advantage Database Server 4.1 is now shipping. The five-user server is just $895. The Windows interface is priced at $299.

Leading Application Developers Abandon Large DOS Xbase Market

With the Xbase application development environment slowing, countless database applications are at risk of being orphaned. Advantage Database Server, however, extends the viability of existing corporate Xbase applications by giving them the performance, integrity and security of Client/Server technology.

Advantage 4.1 allows corporate users to migrate their existing DOS Xbase applications to a Windows Client/Server environment A networking environment that is made up of clients and servers running applications designed for client/server architecture. See client/server. . With the new expanded security features incorporated into Advantage 4.1, the index corruption and data integrity problems that have plagued Xbase users are things of the past. -0-

User Benefits

Security -- Protects sensitive information and reduces the threat
                  of corruption
Integrity -- Eliminates index corruption
Performance -- Reduces network traffic and improves productivity
Flexibility -- Supports popular Windows front-end development tools
Scalability -- Convert from standalone to Client/Server in seconds
Compatibility -- Simple integration into existing applications reduces
                  technical and financial risks

Enhanced Advantage Security

To ensure data security, Advantage 4.1 allows network administrators to "hide" Xbase data files from users that are not accessing the data through an Advantage application. Now, Xbase data file directories can be "hidden" by removing all access rights for specified users-ensuring only Advantage applications with security enabled have access to these critical files.

eyes away from sensitive data that might otherwise be accessed from the DOS or DOT (.) prompt. In addition to protecting sensitive information, this enhanced security also reduces the threat of corruption.

Database Encryption for Network Security

Advantage 4.1 also supports encryption of one or more fields in one or more records. It can also encrypt entire database files. Advantage 4.1 encryption provides an easy way to integrate data security over the network wire.

Scalable Database Solution for Delphi, Visual Basic and Visual C++

In cooperation with SuccessWare International, Extended Systems has developed a scalable Windows database interface called SDE SDE - Software Development Environment: equivalent to SEE. 2. Now the same .EXE Exe (ĕks), river, c.55 mi (90 km) long, rising in the Exmoor, Somerset, SW England, and flowing S across the Cornwall peninsula, past Exeter to the English Channel at Exmouth.  will run on a standalone PC or a network without modification or configuration changes. SDE2 also offers native .VBXs and .DLLs for Delphi, Visual Basic and Visual C++.

Transaction Processing Updating the appropriate database records as soon as a transaction (order, payment, etc.) is entered into the computer. It may also imply that confirmations are sent at the same time.

Transaction processing systems are the backbone of an organization because they update constantly.
with COMMIT and ROLLBACK A DBMS feature that reverses the current transaction out of the database, returning the data to its former state. A rollback is performed when processing a transaction fails at some point, and it is necessary to start over. See two-phase commit.

With its powerful new Transaction Processing System A Transaction Processing System (TPS) is a type of information system. TPSs collect, store, modify, and retrieve the transactions of an organization. A transaction is an event that generates or modifies data that is eventually stored in an information system. , Advantage 4.1 provides even more database integrity. In fact, Advantage 4.1 is the only product that provides true Client/Server transaction processing for .DBF databases. Building Transaction Processing into your application is easy. Three simple transaction commands (BEGIN, COMMIT and ROLLBACK) give your applications the power to ensure multiple update transactions finish entirely or not at all.

Enterprise-Wide ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  Connectivity

Using an industry-standard Level-2 ODBC driver, Advantage 4.1 allows new SQL SQL

applications and legacy Xbase applications to simultaneously share data and index files. Now your application can share its data with any ODBC compliant development or analysis tool. With the Advantage ODBC interface, one .EXE will work with both .DBF and SQL data sources. Since it supports user-friendly Xbase command syntax, there is no need for companies to retrain re·train
