New Copolyesters for large & small bottles. (Keeping up with Blow Molding).

New grades of PETG PETG Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol

and proprietary copolyesters from Eastman Specialty Plastics, Kingsport, Tenn., are said to open up new possibilities in extrusion blow molded containers, notably highly contoured and square-bottom types, as well as 5-gal returnable water bottles that can substitute for polycarbonate A category of plastic materials used to make a myriad of products, including CDs and CD-ROMs.  or PET. Eastman also launched its first stretch-blow moldable copolyester for use in thick-walled jars and vials.

* For extrusion blow molding, Eastman's GN077 PETG is designed to replace PVC PVC: see polyvinyl chloride.

a cleaning agent, usually liquid, for hair; usually consists of a detergent and perfume. Some, usually referred to as medicated shampoos, contain therapeutic substances such as parasiticides, antimicrobials, ketatolytic agents, and antiseborrheic compounds such as selenium
and other bathroom chemicals. Its cost-performance is reportedly comparable to that of PVC.

* Grade GN046 PETG is suited to larger (up to 2-gal) and more complex bottle designs and is FDA-compliant for use in food packaging. It has about 200% higher melt strength than Eastman's standard product, Eastar 6763. "GN046 makes it easier to mold mold, name for certain multicellular organisms of the various classes of the kingdom Fungi, characteristically having bodies composed of a cottony mycelium. The colors of molds are caused by the spores, which are borne on the mycelium.  heavily contoured and square-bottom bottles using copolyester," says Scott Rook rook, term used for a common Eurasian bird (genus Corvus) of the family Corvidae (Crow family), smaller than the American crow. The jackdaw is a European species of the genus. Rooks nest in large colonies, whence the term rookery. , business market manager for Personal Care. The slow crystallization Crystallization

of GN046 means that square-cornered bottles can now be made out of PETG. Previously, PETG and most other plastics had rarely been used in these designs due to risk of stress-cracking at sharp corners, Rook says. Yet square and fluted-contour bottles are increasingly popular in personal-care markets (see photo).

* A developmental, high-melt-strength, proprietary copolyester is aimed at 5-gal water bottles and the housings of water-dispenser units for those bottles. It offers higher impact strength than PET, as well as a 10[degrees]C higher Tg, Eastman says. This allows it to survive high temperatures used to wash returnable water bottles. That limitation has prevented PET from playing a major role in a market dominated by polycarbonate.

* Eastman has introduced the first copolyester suitable for stretch-blow molding. This proprietary resin opens up potential in jars, vials, lipstick holders, and other small, clear containers. Grade AN001 crystallizes slowly, so that thicker-walled bottles can now be blow molded without sacrificing clarity. Currently, PET bottles are limited to 3-nun walls before they begin to lose clarity. The new grade reportedly allows molding of clear cosmetic bottles with up to 12-mm walls.
