New Coolant solves odor, dermatitis, rust problems. (Coolants/Lubricants/Filters).

A Kenosha, WI specialty machining company has greatly improved its plant environment by providing an economical solution to the difficult problems of dermatitis dermatitis (dûr'mətī`tĭs), nonspecific irritation of the skin. The causative agent may be a bacterium, fungus, or parasite; it can also be a foreign substance, known as an allergen. , coolant coolant (kōō´lnt),

Although Converse practices good coolant management, coolant odor started to crop up. When the coolant odor began to become a daily problem, they tried what a lot of companies do. First, they purchased coalescers and skimmers to control the tramp oil, but the coolant continued to go rancid ran·cid

. Then they switched to a conventional semi-synthetic in an attempt to cure the problem. At first it worked, but then the odor came back, not only on Monday mornings, but all the time, even though they had increased the concentration several times. Not only did the odor come back but the situation was further aggravated ag·gra·vate

Ozone Generator

Mike Bennett Mike Bennett is a professional rugby league player for British rugby club St Helens. His specialist position is second-row. On Tuesday, 29 August 2006, Mike signed a contract extension at the Lancashire club which will keep him at Knowsley Road for another two seasons. , Converse maintenance manager, responded to an ad for Dyna Tech's Coolant Manager bacteria control system to find out if the Coolant Manager ozone generator could help with their dermatitis and coolant odor problems. Bennett's main concern was stopping the dermatitis and odor.

After discussing the problem with Dyna Tech, Bennett knew that the Coolant Manager would control the odor, but he recognized that bacteria and odor were not the only problems.

Switching to the conventional semi-synthetic coolant resulted in a significant decline in tool life and rust on the machines. In an effort to regain tool life and prevent rust, the use concentration of the coolant was increased. Tool life increased somewhat and the rust was somewhat controlled, however the use costs went up dramatically. The incidents of dermatitis also began to increase with the increase in concentration. Dyna Tech advised that The Coolant Manager would control the odor problem, but the dermatitis, rust, and concentration problems would still be there.

New Cutting Fluid

The supplier recommended addressing all of the problems by using a new type cutting fluid, Dyna Cool K2002. This coolant is a high performance product formulated with components resistant to bacteria growth yet gentle to the operator. Though it is a semi-synthetic, it has a high oil content for better lubricity lu·bric·i·ty

Bennett decided to test the Dyna Cool K2002.

It didn't take long to see the results. "The operators noticed right away that the coolant didn't smell bad anymore," Bennett noted. The tool life immediately began to increase and the complaints went away. Mike Straube, Converse turning supervisor said, "Tool life wasn't our main concern. We wanted to stop the dermatitis and odor, and we also wanted to stop the rust that we started seeing on the machines. The increased tool life was just a bonus."

The decision was made to use DYNA COOL K2002 throughout the plant. Since that time, dermatitis complaints have disappeared and the rust problems have been solved. Converse has also seen an increase in tool life as high as 20% and no rancid coolant smell.

It has been almost a year since the switch to the new coolant. "Since we switched, we haven't had any more dermatitis or odor complaints. In fact, we knew within two weeks that we had made the right decision in switching to Dyna Cool K2002," states Bennett.

Bennett says they try to keep the coolant as clean as possible, but in a high production shop, it is difficult. Converse uses a simple proportioning system to ensure that adequate concentration is kept in the machines, and skimmers and coalescers are run continuously to control excessive tramp oil. Concentrations are also checked with a refractometer refractometer /re·frac·tom·e·ter/ (re?frak-tom´e-ter)

Converse has greatly improved the plant environment by providing an economical solution to the difficult problems of dermatitis, coolant odor, and rust. "Since we switched to the Dyna Cool K2002 and the odor is gone, the operators don't mind coming in on Monday mornings," notes Bennett. As an additional bonus, they realized a significant increase in tool life and an end to their rust problem. Dyna Tech
