New Compaq ENSA Storage Solutions Enable NonStop eBusiness.

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ), the number one storage supplier in the industry(1), today announced server storage with four times more performance, storage area network (SAN) solutions that extend up to 40 kilometers, and new products for use on multiple Compaq servers. Based on the company's vision of an enterprise-wide storage utility called the Compaq Enterprise Network Storage Architecture (ENSA), the new solutions allow customers in all levels of an organization - from small workgroups to large, business-critical applications - to improve performance, increase availability, and lower overall storage management costs. Compaq's ENSA-based storage solutions allow customers to access data continuously from mission-critical applications all around the world and as such, the storage solutions are an essential ingredient of the Compaq NonStop(R) eBusiness solutions strategy for enterprise computing.

Earlier this month, the Smart Array 4200 controller and Compaq ProLiant 7000 server set an all-time TPC 4-processor performance record by breaking the 25,000 transactions per minute (tpmC) barrier with 25,065.3 tpmC(2).

The new Smart Array 4200 controller is compatible with all Smart Array models so customers can easily upgrade for higher performance, capacity, and availability within minutes. The Smart Array 4200 controller is $2,200(3) and will be available in August.

The new system can be configured in a single-server environment or in a cluster. It significantly reduces downtime from unexpected storage outages and allows customers to perform routine maintenance without taking the system down. A base configuration StorageWorks RAID Array 4000 with dual host adapters and controllers and the Cluster Series F Model 200 Kit will be available in August for approximately $17,000.

Enhanced SAN Solutions

Compaq also enhanced two of its leading SAN-based solutions with new features. The StorageWorks Data Replication Manager software, which replicates online business-critical data in real time at local and remote sites for disaster protection, now supports distances of up to 40 kilometers between sites with an Optical Link Extender from Finisar Corporation. It is ideal for remote storage wo nodes for Windows NT/Intel-based systems, andms. It is available today for the Microsoft Winde StorageWorks Data Replication Manager is $20, software, including Veritas Backup Exec and Comt servers. The Enterprise Backup Solution for Wore on five or less ProLiant servers for automated, high-speed centralized backup processes. Prices for the Enterprise Backup Solution for Workgroups vary depending on th storage resources throughout their organizatioient of the 1999 Gold IDEA award for design excellence, the drives come in a 1-inch hot-plug carrier and are the new drives are $590, $726, and $976 respectively.

The StorageWorks Enclosure 4200 is the next generation Ultra2 SCSI disk enclosure family from Compaq. It supports up to 14 1-inch disk drives, and houses up to 63 percent more spindles per U of rack space than previous models for more I/Os per/second. The StorageWorks Enclosure 4200 enclosure can be used with Compaq Ultra2 Intel- and Alpha-based servers and is $2,560 for a rack model and $2,340 for a tower model. It will be available in August.

Compaq also announced a new Rack 9000 Series of Rack Cabinets to house current and legacy Compaq ProLiant, AlphaServer, and Tandem servers, workstations, networking, and StorageWorks solutions. The solution provides simplified management with a unique design to minimize installation time. The Rack 9000 Series products are 19-inch RETMA standard and support most third-party equipment. The Server Console Switch, a key component of rackmount implementations, allows multiple servers to be accessed and managed by one keyboard, mouse, and monitor (console). The 4- or 8-port console switches can be connected in a tiered fashion to increase server access to as many as 64 servers. The Rack 9000 Series is available immediately and starts at $1,295. The Server Console Switch 4- or 8-port models start at $965. The switches are available now.
