New Certification commissioners.


Paul Pollei, NCTM, and Michael Benson, NCTM, have been appointed to represent the Southwest and East Central Divisions respectively on the Certification Commission. They will serve until April 2006, completing the unexpired terms of Cheryl Pachak-Brooks, NCTM, and Sandra Carnes, NCTM, who resigned from the positions.

International ambassador for piano music, Paul Pollei, NCTM, native of Salt Lake City, continues his efforts as founder and director of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation. In addition to his administrative work with the Bachauer Foundation, he is active in the work of the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy, MTNA and the World Federation of International Music Competitions The World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC) is an organization based in Geneva, Switzerland that maintains a network of the internationally recognized organisations that aim to discover the most promising young talents in classical music through public .

Pollei recently retired from Brigham Young University Brigham Young University, at Provo, Utah; Latter-Day Saints; coeducational; opened as an academy in 1875 and became a university in 1903. It is noted for its law and business schools.  as the coordinator of graduate keyboard studies and a member of its piano faculty. He serves as advisor for the music faculty of the Waterford School in Sandy, Utah, and was a faculty member of the Tuacahn Center for the Arts in St. George, Utah St. George is a city located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Utah, and the county seat of Washington County, Utah.GR6 It is the principal city of and is included in the St. George, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. .

Pollei has been a jury member for many national and international competitions throughout the world and has served as a member of juries in Japan, China, Australia, throughout Europe and in all fifty of the United States. He is founding member of the American Piano Quartet, devoted to research, performance and republication The reexecution or reestablishment by a testator of a will that he or she had once revoked.

 of music for two pianos, eight hands. The quartet has concertized worldwide and continues an active research, performing and recording career.

Teacher to many prize-winning students, Pollei also is a frequent lecturer for teacher workshops and master classes in America and throughout the world. He often writes about the issues of piano pedagogy and piano training for professional journals in the United States. He is the author of Pedagogical Tips for Piano Teaching and Essential Technique for the Pianist: An Organized and Systematic Method of Teaching Piano Technique.

As a faculty member in the department of music at The Ohio State University Ohio State University, main campus at Columbus; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1870, opened 1873 as Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, renamed 1878. There are also campuses at Lima, Mansfield, Marion, and Newark.  at Lima, Michael Benson, NCTM, coordinates the group piano program and teaches general art education courses, as well as music appreciation. As soloist and collaborative pianist, he has performed at the Smithsonian Institution during the International Schubert Symposium, Steinway Hall as a winner in The Pinault Biennial International Piano Competition and Preston Bradley Hall on the Dame Myra Hess Noun 1. He has presented lectures, adjudicated and performed for international, national and state conventions of the College Music Society and MTNA. He also has contributed articles to Texas Music Teacher, Teaching Music, Clavier and the online journal Piano Pedagogy Forum.

His teaching experience includes faculty appointments at Carl Sandburg College Carl Sandburg College is a two-year community college based in Galesburg, Illinois and serving the west-central Illinois region. It has extension campuses in Carthage and Bushnell and a number of online learning initiatives. , University of Wisconsin-Whitewater The University of Wisconsin–Whitewater (also known as UW-Whitewater) is part of the University of Wisconsin System, located in Whitewater, Wisconsin. It became Wisconsin's second public college on April 21, 1868 when it opened its doors to 39 students taught by nine  and Oakland University, as well as pre-college piano camps in Texas, Wisconsin, Ohio and the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. During the fall of 2001, he served as a foreign expert in the Art Education College of Ji Mei University (Xiamen, Peoples Republic of China), where he taught piano, piano pedagogy and group piano.

Benson's piano and piano pedagogy teachers included Esther Mills Wood; Samuel Driggers; Noel Engebretson; Robert Roux; Martha Hilley, NCTM; Sophia Gilmson; and Nancy Garrett. He holds degrees in piano performance from the Shepherd School of Music The Shepherd School of Music is located in Houston, Texas on the campus of Rice University, Texas' most selective institute of higher education.
