New Catalyst Technologies Add Muscle to LLDPE Films.

stronger and tougher films, two firms recently came out with hexence-copolymer LLDPEs based on new catalyst technologies. Both resin resin, any of a class of amorphous solids or semisolids. Resins are found in nature and are chiefly of vegetable origin. They are typically light yellow to dark brown in color; tasteless; odorless or faintly aromatic; translucent or transparent; brittle, fracturing  families are poised to compete with octene LLDPE LLDPE Linear Low Density Polyethylene  and metal-locene LLDPE (mLLDPE), as well as other "super-hexene" grades.

Processability plus strength

Using a "next-generation" Ziegler-Natta catalyst A Ziegler-Natta catalyst is a reagent or a mixture of reagents used in the production of polymers of 1-alkenes (α-olefins). Ziegler-Natta catalysts are typically based on titanium compounds and organometallic aluminium compounds, for example triethylaluminium, (C2  system in a Unipol gas-phase reactor Reactor (electricity)

, Houston-based Equistar Chemicals, LP is producing new Petrothene Select hexene LLDPE resins for blown film. They are said to produce films with better processability and tear strength than mLLDPE. They also boast higher melt strength and dart impact than competitive "superhexenes" having comparable modulus See modulo.  and tear strength. With a density of 0.916 g/cc, the two initial grades have MIs of 0.7 and 1.0. Each is offered with or without slip/antiblock additives.

thinner and thinner films that retain dart impact stregth and have improed tear strength, withouta penalty to processability," says John Hotz, Equistar v.p. of LDPE/LLDPE.

Used in 0.7-mil films, Petro-thene Select has as much dart impact strength as an mLLDPE but has higher tear strength at the same modulus, higher melt strength, and better processability. Films made with these resins do not require use of a processing aid to eliminate melt fracture fracture, breaking of a bone. A simple fracture is one in which there is no contact of the broken bone with the outer air, i.e., the overlying tissues are intact. In a comminuted fracture the bone is splintered. . On the other hand, gloss is not as good as mLLDPE.

The new resins are aimed at heavy-duty applications, including downgauged prime liners liners,

, commercial and industrial packaging, and also consumer packaging such as retail bags.

High strength, high clarity

Hifor Xtreme is the latest in a string of new hexenecopolymer LLDPE film resins from Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn. It is made with the BP gas-phase process and proprietary catalyst technology. Films reportedly exhibit exceptional dart impact and stiffness combined with unusually low seal-initiation temperature. High clarity and high MD tear strength are also claimed.

Initial customer runs have shown that the dart impact of Hifor Xtreme outperforms competitive materials even when downgauged by 25%, according to according to

business market manager Ed Smith. In a 1-mil film, the resin has a dart impact of 1100 g/mil, compared with 400 g/mil for Eastman's Tenite Hifor high-strength film resins. (The latter are said to have about 25% higher dart impact than other LLDPEs used in industrial packaging.)

The new material has haze as low as 7% and gloss reading of 70. It's offered in a variety of formulas for blown and cast film, with densities of 0.917 and 0.926, and MIs of 0.5-0.85. Hifor Xtreme meets FDA FDA
