New Broadband Services to Drive Upgrades to New Technology, According to Dell'Oro Group; ADSL2+, VDSL2, PON Will All Have Successes - But How Quickly?

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- In a newly published report, Dell'Oro Group predicts newer technologies such as ADSL See DSL.

ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
2+, VDSL See DSL.

VDSL - Very high bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line
2 and Passive Optical Networking (PON (Passive Optical Network) An optical point-to-multipoint access network. There are no optical repeaters or other active devices in a PON, hence the name "passive. ) will all find traction in certain markets. Advanced services including TV from service providers over telephone lines will drive upgrades to these technologies through 2009 and partially offset the shipment reductions that will result from decreased levels of subscriber additions that Dell'Oro Group predicts will occur after 2005.

"Overall, we expect service providers to adopt a measured, success-based approach to upgrading and replacing equipment," said Steve Nozik, Principal Analyst for Access research at Dell'Oro Group. "The magnitude, timing and type of replacement will vary by region, by service provider, and depend on success service providers have signing up subscribers to these new revenue generating services. ADSL ports will be upgraded to ADSL2+ (including bonding), VDSL2, or PON depending on the service provider's strategy and the estimate of required bandwidth. We expect ADSL2+ technology to be the replacement of choice in Europe, while VDSL2 and PON will be more prevalent in North America and parts of Asia," he added.

According to the report, changing dynamics are on the horizon for the Access equipment market as the level of new subscribers accelerates to high-speed technologies such as VDSL and PON at the same time overall levels of new broadband subscriber additions are expected to fall (after 2005).
