New Batson Hospital unit offers specialized care for kids.


For a small child, the prospect of undergoing surgery can be frightening and difficult to understand. Doing so in a regular hospital can only add to that uneasiness. But thanks to the vision of officials at the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children in Jackson, Mississippi's youngest patients will now have access to surgical care in an environment filled with comfort and cheer--along with the most advanced technology.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC) is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Located in Jackson, Mississippi (USA), it houses the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Health Related Professions, and Graduate Studies in the Health  officially opened this state-of-the-art pediatric pediatric /pe·di·at·ric/ (pe?de-at´rik) pertaining to the health of children.

 surgical center, the first of its kind in Mississippi, at Batson Hospital in October.

"It's taken a great deal of work from everyone on staff, but for the first time, there will be a surgical facility designed exclusively for children and staffed by physicians and staff specifically trained to treat children," said Dr. Owen B. Evans, hospital chair of pediatrics. "This will enable the Batson Hospital to provide the best care possible for all the children of Mississippi."

Nearly 4,000 surgical procedures Surgical procedures have long and possibly daunting names. The meaning of many surgical procedure names can often be understood if the name is broken into parts. For example in splenectomy, "ectomy" is a suffix meaning the removal of a part of the body. "Splene-" means spleen.  are now performed each year at UMC UMC United Methodist Church

Facilities at the center were carefully designed to serve the young clientele.
