Originally known as sporting apparel, today they are known as casual footwear. , Inc. has implemented HP ProLiant BL20p servers to achieve greater ease of management, deployment and efficiency in its data center. New Balance turned to HP blade servers and technology solutions to meet its needs for a better return on its information technology investment.

"The HP ProLiant blade servers provide an effective, affordable way to offer redundancy, fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

and high service levels for our applications," said Pierre Baudet, business systems manager, New Balance. "I have full faith in HP's ability to meet and exceed our rigorous requirements -- we have not had the same experience with similar offerings from Dell or IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) ."

In that same year, with help from IBM, Sybase created an OS/2 version that Microsoft licensed and branded as Microsoft SQL Server.  and Internet Information Services See IIS. . New Balance also uses the HP blade servers to schedule backup functions of servers such as imaging and re-imaging, in addition to gaining a more efficient use of central processing units See CPU.

"HP ProLiant blade servers are part of an adaptive infrastructure for New Balance, enabling their ongoing innovation," said Mary McDowell, senior vice president and general manager, HP Industry Standard Servers. "They have seen immediate benefits from their implementation of HP blade servers, and their infrastructure is positioned for flexible growth with the next generations of p-Class blade servers."

New Balance uses HP ProLiant Essentials, HP Insight Manager and HP OpenView HP OpenView was a Hewlett Packard product range consisting of an extensive portfolio of network and systems management products. In 2007 the entire HP OpenView portfolio was rebranded under the strengthened HP Software name.  software to manage the ProLiant BL20p blade servers. HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack software has enabled the company to dramatically decrease its server deployment time from two and a half hours to 15 minutes. New Balance's server requirements have grown but the staff deploying and managing servers has not.

"We used to deploy two or three servers per month. Now we may deploy two or three servers in a week but with the same number of IT staff," said Baudet. "We are absolutely thrilled to have ProLiant blade servers and software."

The HP platform enables New Balance to run both two- and four-processor HP ProLiant BL servers using the same infrastructure and power currently installed. Future generations of HP ProLiant p-Class blade servers are being designed to leverage the same power, enclosure and interconnect products currently installed at New Balance, providing critical investment protection.

New Balance's data center also includes HP ProLiant DL360 and DL580 servers, in addition to an HP StorageWorks Disk Array xp128.
