New Bahrain push to spur Singapore trade.

) chief executive Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa yesterday began a four-day Singapore visit to promote trade.

Shaikh Mohammed is part of the Middle East Eminent Persons Programme (MEEPP), jointly organised by the Singapore International Foundation The Singapore International Foundation (Abbreviation: SIF; Chinese: 新加坡国际基金会), is a non-profit organisation that was established on 1 August 1991. Founded in aid of Singapore's globalisation efforts.  (SIF) and the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Launched in 2007, the programme aims to promote personal and institutional links between leading Middle East and Singapore personalities in government and the private sector through the exchange of views on areas of mutual interest. Shaikh Mohammed is the 11 distinguished person to have been invited to Singapore as part of the MEEPP.

Those nominated are considered to have contributed extensively to the development of their own country.

Shaikh Mohammed heralded the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA FTA

) in December between Singapore and the GCC GCC: see Gulf Cooperation Council.

Shaikh Mohammed also hailed the economic values and advantages that the two island countries share.

"There are obvious synergies between Bahrain and Singapore, both are advanced logistics hubs, serving as strategic gateways to the Gulf and Asia regions respectively.

"The two countries are respected financial centres and have invested in developing a well-educated national workforce, and have each signed FTAs with the US," he said.

"Given these similarities it is no surprise that the current state of economic and trade relations are strong, and I anticipate that the meetings held during this visit will help underpin and build upon them."

During this visit Shaikh Mohammed will meet National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan Mah Bow Tan (Chinese: 马宝山, Pinyin: Mǎ Bǎoshān, born September 12, 1948) is the Minister for National Development of Singapore. He is also the elected Member of Parliament of Tampines Group Representation Constituency (GRC) for the People's Action , Minister of State for Trade The Minister of State for Trade is an executive position in the Government of the United Kingdom, in both the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for Trade and Industry  and Industry Lee Yi Shyan Lee Yi Shyan (李弈賢, b. 9th March 1962) is a Singaporean Member of Parliament who represents East Coast GRC. He is also currently the Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry. , senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is a junior ministerial position in the British government. He will also attend a session with the Singapore Business Federation. Singapore's CapitaLand became the first Singaporean mega-company to invest in the Middle East when it joined with Bahrain-based investment bank Arcapita - which itself has a regional headquarters in Singapore - for the Bahrain Bay project.
