New Antec add-on cards enable real-time TV/video on computer screen for home, business use.


FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 1997--Antec Inc.'s Consumer Products Division has introduced two add-on cards that allow personal and business computer users to view television signals of all types on their computers while they simultaneously use other applications, such as word processors, spreadsheets, database programs, educational programs and games, it was announced Wednesday by Antec Vice President Saul Freedman freed·man

"We see extensive possibilities for these products in corporate offices, small offices and in the home," Freedman said. "Features and pricing reflect varying levels and types of usage."

The new cards, TeleViewer and Televiewer Plus, are compatible with virtually every VGA card A display adapter that provides VGA resolution. All display adapters (graphics cards) for PCs provide base level VGA resolutions. They are now available through major retail and distribution channels, with suggested retail prices of $139 and $249 for TeleViewer and TeleViewer Plus, respectively.

"A typical application might find departmental training exercises conducted over corporate networks using closed-circuit TV or training videos," Freedman said.

"In small offices, secure areas and professional suites, a video camera can be utilized with TeleViewer and an intercom system to monitor entry foyers. In home offices, TeleViewer can be used similarly to interact with visitors or delivery personnel. Health- care professionals can observe patients from the nurses' station and telecommuting telecommuting, an arrangement by which people work at home using a computer and telephone, transmitting work material to a business office by means of a modem and telephone lines; it is also known as telework.  new parents can even use such an arrangement to monitor the nursery while they work."

Both versions of TeleViewer are 181-channel cable-ready and support VHF/UHF signals from antenna, composite video A video color format that combines all three YUV video signals into one channel. TeleViewer Plus includes the following enhancements to the standard features: -0-

-- a preview/selection feature, through which miniature pictures from 16 channels are displayed, with programming selected by mouse-click on the representative picture.

-- full motion or still frame video capture capability, which allows footage from cable, broadcast, video or camcorder to be acquired and saved to AVI (Audio Video Interleaved) A Windows multimedia video format from Microsoft. It interleaves standard waveform audio and digital video frames (bitmaps) to provide reduced animation at 15 fps at 160x120x8 resolution.
