New ANA Domestic Economy Seat Wins Good Design Award.Tokyo, Japan, Oct 17, 2005 - (JCNN) - ANA's newly unveiled domestic Economy Class seat received a Good Design Award in the Products Design Section of the Good Design Awards 2005 line announced on October 5. The ergonomic, slimmer and lighter seat will be introduced this month on ANA's Boeing 767-300 fleet, and thereafter rolled out across all ANA aircraft. The award, with a history reaching back to 1957, was bestowed by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIPDO), the only organization in Japan involved in the comprehensive promotion of design activities. Its criteria take quality, ease of use, safety features, innovation and environmental friendliness also figure on the list of elements under scrutiny. The seat was noted for using new design elements to achieve weight reductions. Unlike its predecessors which have aluminium frames, the frame of the new seat is made from carbon reinforced plastic, allowing for changes to the seat shape and structure, which in turn lead to a reduction in the weight of the seat. This is achieved while maintaining strength and safety features. Ease of use, functionality, environmentally friendly features, and the fact that it points the way forward for a new global standard in airplane seats, were also highlighted in the award.
