New 3M gigabyte-class minicartridges meet performance, reliability demands of users; market boost for 3.5-inch form factor.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1994--3M has announced two new gigabyte-class high-performance quarter-inch minicartridges -- the mini Magnus 3100 and the mini Magnus 3080 cartridges -- that will provide network and desktop users with significant improvements in performance and reliability.

3M's mini Magnus 3080 minicartridges will be available in December, and the mini Magnus 3100 in early 1995. They support the industry's first minicartridge class of high-performance, high- capacity SCSI-2 tape drives.

"These two minicartridges meet growing user demand for greater performance in the LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  environment," said Chuck Kummeth, business development manager, 3M Data Storage Tape Technology Division. "3M believes users will be attracted to these products because of the increase in capacity and the proven reliability of the QIC (Quarter Inch Cartridge) A magnetic tape technology introduced in the early 1980s that has been widely used for backup. It was the first popular tape format for PCs.  format."

The 3M mini Magnus 3100 cartridge has 400 feet of tape and offers 2 GB of uncompressed storage capacity. The cartridge features a unique hole pattern and gold write-lockout switch that enables LAN managers to quickly differentiate it from other minicartridges in their library.

The mini Magnus 3100 cartridge has a sustainable transfer rate of 505 KB/s. It supports 48 tracks of data, based on the QIC-3110 standard and uses 1400 oersted Pronounced "erst-ed." On magneto-optic media, it takes between 5,000 to 10,000 Oersted. See Oersted.  of barium ferrite provides recording densities of up to 70,000 flux transitions per inch (ftpi).

Shipment of 3M's mini Magnus 3100 cartridge coincides with the commercial availability of Exabyte's new EXB-2502 tape drive.

The 3M mini Magnus 3080 cartridge has 400 feet of tape and offers 1.6 GB of uncompressed storage capacity. The minicartridge provides a sustainable transfer rate of 450 KB/s and supports 60 tracks of data, based on the QIC-3080 standard.

The minicartridge uses 900 oersted cobalt-modified gamma ferric oxide magnetic particle tape coating, a performance-tested formulation that produces some of the highest signal-to-noise ratios of any tape coating material coating material,
