New "rye beer" goes against standard grain; "Rye it, you'll like it!" says microbrewer.


SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1996--Rye bread is a bakery staple. Rye whiskey whiskey [from the Gaelic for "water of life"], spirituous liquor distilled from a fermented mash of grains, usually rye, barley, oats, wheat, or corn. Inferior whiskeys are made from potatoes, beets, and other roots.  is the stuff of bar-room legend. But what about rye beer Rye beer refers to any beer in which rye (generally malted) is substituted for some portion of the barley malt.

One example of this is roggenbier which is a specialty beer produced with up to sixty percent rye malt.

Thanks to a Northwest craft-brewery, suds enthusiasts no longer need search in vain for this distinctive grain.

The brewers at Pyramid Ales have introduced "Pyramid Rye," a copper-colored ale brewed with a substantial portion of rye grain for a naturally-hazy look and lightly "spicy" flavor. It will be available year-round in bottles and kegs.

 Clay Biberdorf, specially-malted rye accounts for 25 percent of all the grain that goes into each batch of the new ale (the rest is barley barley, annual cereal plant (Hordeum vulgare and sometimes other species) of the family Gramineae (grass family), cultivated by humans probably as early as any cereal.  malt, the "standard" grain for most beers). He says the brew is best enjoyed alongside grilled chicken, smoked turkey, or "your favorite deli sandwich -- on rye bread, of course!"

Rye has been cultivated by farmers for more than 8,000 years. It imparts an appealing fruity, "spicy" character that is particularly notable in rye-based breads such as pumpernickel. The grain also is a common ingredient in the traditional ales of eastern Europe Eastern Europe

Pyramid Ales are available in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Pyramid Ales are brewed by Hart Brewing (Nasdaq: HOPS), which is constructing the new Pyramid Ale Brewery & Alehouse at Berkeley, Calif. (scheduled to open in September 1996).
