Network Telesystems Offers Complete NetBIOS Name Server Compatible With OS/2 Warp Server Networks.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 1996--Network TeleSystems, Inc., has introduced its Shadow(TM) NetBIOS Name A name assigned to a Windows computer that uses the common 15-character NetBIOS format. See NetBIOS.  Server (NBNS (NetBIOS Name Server) See NBT. ) for use in enterprise TCP/IP TCP/IP
in full Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol

Standard Internet communications protocols that allow digital computers to communicate over long distances.
networks built around IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  OS/2(TM) Warp Server.

Shadow provides a way for DOS, Windows and OS/2 clients to communicate with OS/2 Warp Server file-, application- and print-sharing services in routed network environments, including the Internet.

The only NBNS fully compatible with IBM's implementation of NetBIOS over TCP (1) (Transmission Control Protocol) The reliable transport protocol within the TCP/IP protocol suite. TCP ensures that all data arrive accurately and 100% intact at the other end. , Shadow is available directly from NTS NTS National Technical Systems

Today's enterprise networks rely on cumbersome administrative procedures to maintain directory files used by client workstations to connect to servers beyond the workgroup. The Shadow NetBIOS Name Server together with the new client TCP/IP software available with the IBM Warp Server eliminate the need for these procedures, and provide a solution that scales from small networks to networks with virtually unlimited numbers of workstations and servers.

Steven King, IBM product manager for OS/2 Warp Server, said, "Shadow and the NBNS-enabled TCP/IP client software are essential to IBM's product strategy for OS/2 in the enterprise which exploits NetBIOS over TCP for client-server connectivity."

The Shadow NetBIOS Name Server implements the full IETF See Internet Engineering Task Force.

IETF - Internet Engineering Task Force
(Internet Engineering Task Force (c/o Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI), Reston, VA, www.ietf.org) Founded in 1986, the IETF is a non-membership, open, voluntary standards organization dedicated to identifying problems and opportunities in IP data networks and proposing technical solutions to the ) specifications for NetBIOS over TCP as well as NetBIOS datagram distribution (RFCs 1001 and 1002), and provides advanced features -- not available in any other NBNS product -- which are critical to the reliable and efficient operation of large networks with many subnets.

For example, multiple Shadow Servers operate as peers when managing a distributed database of NetBIOS names and IP addresses. Each Shadow Server can dynamically query others for name and IP address information. Information in the database can be replicated across Shadow Servers for high availability, and/or segregated to limit network traffic overhead. A single Shadow Server can support tens of thousands of workstations and can perform about 30,000 name- registration or name-query transactions per minute, regardless of the size of the database.

Shadow Remote Manager, also available from NTS, provides a convenient way to manage Shadow Servers remotely across a network. Shadow Remote Manager interacts to configure the Shadow Server, upload and download names, and log reports about server and network operation. A single Shadow Remote Manager can handle any number of Shadow Servers.

OS/2 Warp Server 4 includes an enhanced version of the OS/2 TCP/IP protocol software in addition to DOS and Windows VxD TCP/IP drivers licensed from NTS which fully support Shadow. The drivers allow connectivity from any NetBIOS- or Windows Sockets-based application program to another, and to an OS/2 Warp Server.

An enterprise version of Shadow is available immediately. Prices begin at $10,000 for a site license and depend on the number of workstations supported. A white paper describing the requirements for a NetBIOS name server is available on the NTS home page: http://www.ntsi.com.

Network TeleSystems, Inc. (NTS), headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., markets and supports an integrated set of data communication protocol driver software, utilities and applications based on the industry-standard TCP/IP networking protocols. NTS products, designed for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  suppliers and large enterprise networks, provide connectivity among personal computers, and between PCs and other systems. The firm offers products for all popular PC operating systems, including DOS, Microsoft Windows, Windows for Workgroups A version of Windows 3.1 introduced in 1992 that added peer-to-peer networking.
