Network Solutions Reflects on the Loss of Dr. Jon Postel.


HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 19, 1998--Network Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq: NSOL) joins with the Internet community in mourning the untimely passage of Jonathan B. Postel, Ph.D., a researcher and division director, Computer Network Division, at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute (ISI ISI International Sensitivity Index, see there ) and director of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority See IANA.

Network Solutions has had a long relationship with Dr. Postel and partnered with him in the InterNIC services Cooperative Agreement with the National Science Foundation in 1992, which first began the transition of the Internet to the private sector. Since then, Network Solutions has coordinated with Dr. Postel on many technical issues related to the domain name system and many Network Solutions employees have maintained a close working relationship with him. Dr. Postel also oversaw the .us top-level domain (networking) top-level domain - The last and most significant component of an Internet fully qualified domain name, the part after the last ".". For example, host wombat.doc.ic.ac.uk is in top-level domain "uk" (for United Kingdom).  registration services under a contract with Network Solutions.
