How Safe is Your Network?

"The recent access gained into Microsoft's corporate computer network by computer hackers has highlighted the risk of unauthorised access to computer systems and the information which may be viewed or stolen," said James Cook of law firm Cobbetts. Major criticisms of ISPs and Networks

Increased fraud, confusing pricing and major security issues wrong telecoms providers and networks are just three of the concerns of more than 400 senior business buyers and users of telecommunications services in the UK. These widespread concerns are revealed in the eighth annual survey of the Communications Management Communications management is the systematic planning, implementing, monitoring, and revision of all the channels of communication within an organization, and between organizations; it also includes the organization and dissemination of new communication directives connected with an  Association (CMA CMA - Concert Multithread Architecture from DEC. ) whose members spend more than 10 billion [pounds sterling] on telecoms services each year.

The survey research and analysis conducted by top international research company Total Research Ltd - is an annual barometer of the current stage of development of the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT (1) (Information and Communications Technology) An umbrella term for the information technology field. The results provide an in-depth undemanding of the opinions and attitudes of key ICT professionals in major organisations towards current and emerging technologies and services, usage of service providers, as well as detailed views and opinions of the performance of telecoms service providers.

Their main concerns about Fixed, Mobile and On-line services are:-.

* Fraud on the mobile network is on the increase

* Fraud and security issues delay e-commerce take-up

* Internet pricing remains confusing

* ICT users believe Oftel has failed to deliver competition nationwide

* Broadband roll-out is too slow

* Broadband access See broadband and wireless broadband.  should be provided to anyone on demand

* Mobile is not a viable alternative for broadband delivery short term

* Mobile and Broadband Fixed Wireless auctions offer a poor deal to business users

* Dial-up Interact access should be free

IT directors shun `one-stop' carriers

A survey of 150 IT directors by network services company, Vanco, has concluded that 70% believe a `virtual network' of multiple carriers and infrastructures is more likely to deliver the service benefits promised. The option of using a single carrier with its own infrastructure to provide end-to-end connectivity End-to-end connectivity is a property of the Internet that allows all nodes of the network to send packets to all other nodes of the network, without requiring intermediate network elements to further interpret them. It was for the first time implemented in the CYCLADES-network.  was viewed as less efficient and more unreliable.

In addition, a flexible and adaptable network contract was rated second only to speed of access to data, in terms of key service areas. Feedback suggests this is because customers want to take advantage of falling circuit prices in the deregulated market by being able to switch to the most competitive suppliers without being tied into a long term contract with one telco. The results demonstrate increasing customer expectation in a market that has seen the collapse of infrastructure-led telecoms companies including Iaxis and Oxygen. The suggestion is that IT directors are now purchasing their infrastructure separately from the operation of the network. Areas such as performance monitoring, ability to access a variety of technologies and service guarantees are leading the way.

Solutions, have formed a joint venture, called blueyonder workwise, to revolutionise the delivery of e-economy services to Britain's small businesses. The service, blueyonder workwise - will provide speeds 10 times faster than currently available through existing dial-up connections to the Internet and offer a permanent, always-on connection at a fixed cost, removing the requirement for logging-on every time an email needs to be retrieved or a website accessed. With four out of ten employees having to log onto the net more than 5 times a day, and one in ten more than 15 times a day, the average time wasted by each employee with a dial-up service is one hour forty minutes each day, that's over 400 hours a year. Translated nationally, this means the UK is losing a staggering seven billion pounds every year in lost hours waiting for downloads.

On accessing the blueyonder workwise portal, www.byworkwise.com, the user will have the opportunity to select from a whole range of business services and applications including integrated finance and accounting packages for payroll, expenses, stock control, and invoicing, as well as additional services provided through strategic alliances with companies such as Netstore, who will provide secure online data back; and GroupTrade who will offer bulk purchasing Bulk Purchasing is when products are bought in large quantities. Indus River Adds Network Address Translation to VPN

Indus River Networks, has added network address translation, firewall and proxy traversal to its RiverWorks Enterprise VPN. To date, enterprises have faced a significant challenge when deploying IPSec VPN access to remote users who either utilise broadband services such as DSL DSL

In these cases, networking devices such as firewalls, proxy servers or NAT servers either block or alter IPSec traffic preventing successful VPN connections.
