), the leading provider of dedicated, network data-access servers known as filers, today unveiled the industry's first data storage and management solution compliant with the network data management protocol (NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) An open standard for backing up data in a heterogeneous environment. Developed by Network Appliance and IntelliGuard Software, NDMP uses a common data format which is written to and read from drivers for the specific disk and ).

The NDMP-compliant version of BudTool allows users to perform automated local and network backup of Network Appliance filers using the NDMP standard. Together these products offer customers a convenient, simplified and high-performance solution to the challenges of enterprise data storage, access and management.

NDMP, which was co-developed by PDC (1) (Primary Domain Controller) A Windows NT/2000 service that manages security for its local domain. Every domain has one PDC, which contains a database of usernames, passwords and permissions.  and Network Appliance and has received broad support from industry leaders, is a new industry standard intended to simplify and increase the performance of network file backup. The combination of NDMP-compliant versions of BudTool and Network Appliance filers enable administrators to back up critical data to either local or network tape jukebox devices from a centralized management system located anywhere on the network.

"This announcement marks a major step forward for the enterprise-class data management community," said Roger Stager, chief technology officer at PDC.

"With the introduction of NDMP-compliant versions of BudTool and Network Appliance's Data ONTAP ONTAP Open Network Technology for Appliance Products (TM) software, PDC is able to offer a compelling alternative to proprietary backup products. Now users can deploy a high-performance and easily manageable data management infrastructure using fully standards-based technology. PDC is helping companies reduce the cost and complexity of data, file system and application management on enterprise-class networks. These products show that NDMP is ready for prime-time."

BudTool is an open, standards-based solution designed to scale to meet corporate-wide data backup and restore requirements. Unlike proprietary products that rely on non-standard tape formats, BudTool uses native server operating system See network operating system.  commands to backup and restore data. BudTool customers are not locked into a single software package and the devices it supports; a tape backup Using magnetic tape for storing duplicate copies of hard disk files. Users can add an internal or external tape drive to their desktop computers for backup purposes, and files are typically copied to the tapes using a backup utility that updates on a periodic schedule.  created with BudTool can be read by any compatible system.

With BudTool, PDC has elevated its standards-based approach to a new level, enabling customers to choose best-of-breed devices for data storage and tape backup. The NDMP-compliant BudTool works with the Network Appliance family of data access filers, and tape jukeboxes; other devices will be available in the future.

"PDC and Network Appliance have successfully delivered on the promise of NDMP," said Robert Hamilton For other persons named Robert Hamilton, see Robert Hamilton (disambiguation).

With high-performance data backup and restore, and centralized data management of network data, NetApp and PDC can meet increasingly demanding customer requirements. Plus, with support for both local and network backup devices, we provide the flexibility companies need to meet different network environments."

About NDMP

NDMP is an industry standard protocol created to address issues associated with managing and backing up network storage devices. (Editor's note Editor's Note (foaled in 1993 in Kentucky) is an American thoroughbred Stallion racehorse. He was sired by 1992 U.S. Champion 2 YO Colt Forty Niner, who in turn was a son of Champion sire Mr. Prospector and out of the mare, Beware Of The Cat.

For IS departments and system administrators, NDMP will ensure interoperability between different file servers and back-up solutions, significantly simplifying the data management process. By making every network attached storage device back-up ready, NDMP enables true plug-and-play back-up operation. The user will not be required to install any additional software on an NDMP-compliant network storage device.

About the NetApp Filer and Software

Network Appliance's Data ONTAP (Open Network Technology for Appliance Products) software enables the NetApp filers to provide fast network data access, simple administration and reliable data storage. Data ONTAP is comprised of a number of software modules, or layers, that quickly route data from storage devices, such as SCSI SCSI

drives, to network interfaces, such as Ethernet, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers.  or ATM, where it can be accessed by a user.

WAFL (Write Anywhere File Layout) A high-performance journaled file system used in Network Appliance's NAS and caching devices. It natively supports RAID implementations and allows for expansion on the fly. , the Network Appliance file system, is designed specifically to provide high-performance network data access. A NetApp filer is able to provide simultaneous, transparent access to NFS (Network File System) The file sharing protocol in a Unix network. This de facto Unix standard, which is widely known as a "distributed file system," was developed by Sun. See file sharing protocol and WebNFS.

files. Optimized file system write operations, combined with efficient communication between the network file access protocol, WAFL, and RAID, enable Network Appliance filers to provide the industry's fastest data response times.

BudTool

BudTool is a leading backup management tool for enterprise networks. It offers sophisticated features designed to meet the needs of large-scale network computing environments, including unlimited network growth, high volume data cataloging, tape jukebox robotics control and scheduling automation.

With unique media management capabilities, BudTool also enables corporations to implement proper media policies, such as media rotation, media retirement and tape duplication for off-site storage. BudTool requires no client-side software to install and maintain, resulting in both cost and time savings. Since PDC licenses only the media server, the cost per seat actually diminishes as a network grows.

NDMP-compliant BudTool is available immediately on the Solaris platform, and supports the Network Appliance family of NDMP filers and a wide range of tape jukeboxes. Support for additional services will be added when they become available. BudTool pricing starts at $2,495.

The NDMP-compliant version of the Network Appliance Data ONTAP software is also available immediately. It is being made available as a no charge software upgrade for all Data ONTAP 4.0 users.

About Network Appliance

Network Appliance develops and markets data storage and access devices known as filers that deliver shared file service for UNIX UNIX
