Netsation Simplifies and Automates Network Configurator with Powerful New Features.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK Research Triangle Park, research, business, medical, and educational complex situated in central North Carolina. It has an area of 6,900 acres (2,795 hectares) and is 8 × 2 mi (13 × 3 km) in size. Named for the triangle formed by Duke Univ. , N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 1997-- Routers and switches are now even easier to deploy and maintain thanks to enhancements to Netsation's Network Configurator, a Java-based, client/server configuration tool. Netsation announced today, only two months after Network Configurator has been shipping, that the company is aggressively delivering on its promise to continue to enhance the product with features driven by customer needs. Network Configurator 1.2 was generally available Dec. 1.

"We have received tremendous feedback since the product first became available, and the fact that Network Configurator has been built using a flexible architecture employing 100-percent Java gives us the ability to quickly incorporate new features," said Sean Harrison, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Netsation. "These new features will further simplify and automate the once-complex task of configuring routers and switches."

Major new features incorporated into Network Configurator 1.2 include:

o Global password change - Change VTY (Virtual TeletYpe) A command line interface created in a router for a Telnet session. The router is able to generate a VTY dynamically. See virtual terminal. , Enable, Console, and SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  passwords in one step for any number of devices

o Scheduling - Activities such as changing passwords, importing configurations, and exporting configurations can be scheduled to run at a specified time

o Import Wizard - Just one of the powerful wizards incorporated into this release, Import Wizard supports importing configurations directly from any number of devices

o Device synchronization - Use "re-import" to ensure database accuracy by updating the Network Configurator database with the existing "live" device configuration

o E-mail notification - Automatically sends an e-mail if:

- a scheduled job fails

- user-specified messages are received via syslog

- a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) A lightweight version of the FTP protocol that has no directory browsing or password capability. Employing UDP rather than TCP for transport, TFTP is typically used to transfer firmware upgrades to network equipment such as  transfer fails

The following support has also been introduced into the product:

o Topology - IPX (Internetwork Packet EXchange) The network layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the IP layer in TCP/IP, it contains a network address and allows messages to be routed to a different network or subnet.  & OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) A routing protocol that determines the best path for routing IP traffic over a TCP/IP network based on distance between nodes and several quality parameters.

o Devices - Cisco 1003, 1004, 1005, 3620, 3640

o Interfaces - Ethernet/Fast Ethernet VIP, Token Ring A local area network (LAN) access method developed by IBM. Conforming to the IEEE 802.5 standard, Token Ring uses a token ring access method and connects up to 255 nodes in a star topology at 4, 16 or 100 Mbps.  VIP, Serial

VIP, T1/E1

o Protocols - IP Network Address Translation (NAT (Network Address Translation) An IETF standard that allows an organization to present itself to the Internet with far fewer IP addresses than there are nodes on its internal network. )

Network Configurator is a Java-based, vendor-independent configuration tool that takes a revolutionary new approach by automating router and switch configuration with an intuitive, graphical interface and a centralized configuration database. Further, it uses a relational approach to network configuration, using knowledge of the network at large to perform validation, syntax and parameter checks in relation to other device configurations in the network. As a result, network administrators can configure heterogeneous networks with fewer errors and greater confidence and speed than is currently possible with traditional, device-centric tools.

Release 1 of Network Configurator is for the configuration and management of CiscoPro and Cisco 1xxx, 2xxx, 36xx, 38xx, 4xxx, 7xxx and 12xxx devices running IOS (1) (Internetwork Operating System) An operating system from Cisco that is the primary control program used in its routers. IOS is widely used and robust system software that supports the common functions of all products under Cisco's CiscoFusion architecture.  version 10.3 or later. Additional vendor support will follow in subsequent releases.

Netsation, based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., was formed in August 1996 to satisfy unmet needs in network management with products that take advantage of the convergence of new technologies such as Java and the Web.
