The announcement that the Netopia R6000 series is demonstrating interoperability with ADSL DSLAMs whose combined footprint terminates almost all the installed base of ADSL circuits is good news both for small businesses and service providers: not only does the R6000 series bring to ADSL the unparalleled set of business-class features that distinguishes Netopia's SDSL See DSL.

dial backup module. This unique feature allows small businesses to maintain mission-critical Internet connectivity, should their primary ADSL connection ever go down, and enables CLECs and service providers to configure routers remotely and also to "fast track" Internet service by offering their customers immediate V.90 or ISDN service while they are waiting for their ADSL circuit to be turned up.

"We designed the Netopia R6000 series as a true business-class ADSL router, providing features that really answer the practical needs of small and medium size businesses," said Michael Trupiano, senior vice president and general manager, Netopia Internet Equipment Division. "The R6000's participation in the DSL Forum's Interoperability Showcase proves that it can be deployed almost everywhere where ADSL service is available."

"Netopia business-class DSL CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) Communications equipment that resides on the customer's premises.

offers small businesses a rich feature set and a uniquely flexible modular architecture," said Nigel Cole, vice president of business development, Orckit Communications. "We are very glad to see Netopia offer an ADSL router that is fully interoperable with Orckit's worldwide deployed DSLAMs."

"We recently certified Netopia's R7200 series SDSL routers as interoperable with Paradyne's Hotwire GranDSLAM, and we are very happy to extend this certification to Netopia's new R6000 series ADSL routers," said Frank Wiener, vice president of Broadband Access Solutions at Paradyne. "The combination of Paradyne's robust and technologically innovative DSLAM and Netopia's feature-rich ADSL routers will provide ISPs, CLECs and carriers with an end-to-end ADSL solution that offers the reliability and the advanced functionality that today's businesses are demanding from their Internet connections."

Netopia DSL Routers Offer Uniquely Rich Feature Set

The Netopia R6000 series includes the only ADSL routers to offer an integrated dial backup module, a feature which is also offered in Netopia SDSL, IDSL and leased-line routers. The R6000 series also offers the rich set of business-class features which distinguishes Netopia in the marketplace. These include:

-- A built-in firewall that uses packet filtering and network

address translation to protect a company's network resources.

This enhanced security is especially important to DSL customers,

as DSL connections are "always on."

-- Secure VPN, which lets businesses easily set up extranets for

partners and vendors, securely connect branch offices, and

provide secure LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  access to remote and mobile workers.

Netopia's PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) A protocol from Microsoft that is used to create a virtual private network (VPN) over the Internet. Remote users can access their corporate networks via any ISP that supports PPTP on its servers.  VPN implementation allows small businesses to

implement a business-class VPN solution using just a Netopia

router and the client software built into the Windows operating

system. No NT Server or external VPN equipment is needed.

-- Dynamic MultiNAT, a sophisticated NAT (Network Address

Translation) extension that provides the security of a NAT

"wall" to hide LAN IP addresses, while providing flexibility in

the use of multiple IP addresses offered by an ISP.

-- A built-in 8-port hub, which means that smaller businesses can

use the router to set up their network as well as to connect

their network to the Internet.

-- Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) implemented on

the router itself. This new technology facilitates the

deployment of broadband connectivity technologies, enhances

ease of set up for the end customer, simplifies technical

support, and provides added security for businesses that

support telecommuting.

-- Sophisticated diagnostic, management and monitoring tools such

as Ping, Trace Route, Syslog, Telnet client and SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. .

-- A uniquely extensible modular architecture which allows the

routers to be expanded with a number of add-on kits such as

V.90 or ISDN dial backup and upgraded to new WAN technologies

as they become available.
