Netli, the first company to offer a complete Application Delivery Network (ADN ADN Anchorage Daily News (Alaska newspaper)

), announced today the addition of new acceleration solutions for applications and content secured with Secure Socket Layer (SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) The leading security protocol on the Internet. Developed by Netscape, SSL is widely used to do two things: to validate the identity of a Web site and to create an encrypted connection for sending credit card and other personal data. ) (HTTPS (1) (HyperText Transport Protocol Secure) The protocol for accessing a secure Web server. Using HTTPS in the URL instead of HTTP directs the message to a secure port number rather than the default Web port number of 80. ). NetLightning(TM) SSL now provides transport and application-level optimization for SSL applications, while maintaining end-to-end security. Netli partnered with cryptographic security leader nCipher to deliver breakthrough acceleration for SSL applications and provide FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) A series of publications issed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that specifies information security guidelines for federal government departments and agencies.  140-2 Level-3 validated security. The NetLightning SSL solution suite is designed to meet enterprise performance and security requirements (HIPPA Hip´pa

Web Access transactions with and without the NetLightning SSL solutions. Multiple day tests from London and Singapore to a server in California showed up to 3x performance improvements with the NetLightning SSL service. London and Singapore experienced near local-like performance with response times within 10 percent of response times for local users.

"As enterprises attempt to extend their Web applications to users in remote geographies they are increasingly looking to SSL to secure raffic, but poor application performance often results in lack of end-user adoption of these business-critical applications. SSL applications that perform well locally will experience unacceptable performance when accessed by a global user base," said Peter Sevcik, NetForecast President. "Few solutions exist to accelerate SSL Web applications and deliver excellent user response globally. Companies extending SSL applications globally from a central data center should consider NetLightning SSL."

NetLightning SSL increases speed and availability of applications by applying a variety of transport and application level optimization techniques while requiring no changes to server, client or application. Acting as an HTTPS proxy, NetLightning SSL securely delivers applications end-to-end while ensuring that no traffic is transmitted during any portion of the communications between clients and origin servers.

Two versions of the service are available to meet customer performance and deployment requirements:

NetLightning SSL-T

This service provides the full benefit from transport layer performance optimizations including the Netli protocol which eliminates latency associated with TCPs three way handshake, slow-start pauses, and excessive retransmission Retransmission might refer to:
  • Retransmission (data networks), the resending of packets which have been damaged or lost
  • Replication of a signal at a repeater
intervals due to packet loss and congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

congestion - When the offered load of a data communication path exceeds the capacity.
. No additional installation is required to take advantage of this offering.

NetLightning SSL-AT

This service delivers the highest level of acceleration by leveraging both transport and application layer performance optimizations, including caching, compression, image pre-fetching and the complete suite of NetLightning technologies.

Both NetLightning SSL solutions are transparent, requiring no changes to server software, application or clients.

"We are pleased to partner with Netli and provide part of their service infrastructure that focuses on delivering a high level of security while still optimizing performance and tackling many of the management headaches associated with running Web-based applications," said Richard Moulds nCipher, Vice President of Marketing. "While nCipher is redefining how, when and where cryptography can be used to protect an organization and its information assets, Netli is redefining how enterprises extend the reach of their Web applications worldwide."

The NetLightning suite of SSL solutions is ideally suited for accelerating and securing the global delivery of applications such as Microsoft Outlook Web Access, PeopleSoft, Lotus iNotes, Siebel, I2 and SAP.

"Our customers should not have to compromise by trading security for application performance. They have demanded better response times from their centralized cen·tral·ize

SSL applications that are being delivered globally," said Willie M. Tejada, vice president of marketing and business development for Netli. "With NetLightning SSL and our partnership with nCipher, enterprises can now provide local-like response times to their applications and maintain security that complies with the strictest of standards."

About Netli

Netli is the first company to deliver a complete Application Delivery Network (ADN) service that transparently provides global sub-second response times for Web applications that are located in a centralized data center. Organizations such as HP, Nielsen//NetRatings, and Millipore are using Netli's first service offering -- NetLightning(TM) -- to increase revenue, decrease support costs, and improve end user satisfaction without deploying expensive additional data center infrastructure. The service is ideal for organizations that want to achieve sub-second response times, increased availability, and secure access for their Web applications worldwide with no server or client changes, and no capital expenditures.
